Explanation of the Verse:
This verse continues the vivid scene of the Day of Judgment, where the disbelievers' own ears, eyes, and skins bear witness against them for the sins they committed. After they are confronted with this undeniable testimony, Allah describes their utter hopelessness in two powerful scenarios:
First, "If they endure patiently, the Fire will still be their dwelling." Their patience is of no benefit to them whatsoever. It is not the patience of the righteous who endure trials with hope of reward; rather, it is the forced endurance of the condemned, who have no escape. The Fire is not merely a temporary punishment — it is their permanent home, their final resting place, and there is no way out of it.
Second, "And if they seek to be appeased, they will not be among those whose requests are granted." They will beg to return to the worldly life to make amends, to do good deeds, and to worship Allah properly. They will plead for a second chance, asking Allah to be pleased with them. But the door of return has been sealed forever. Their excuses will not be accepted, their repentance will not be received, and their requests will be met with rejection. The time for action has passed; the time for reaping what they sowed has arrived.
This verse teaches us a profound lesson: the opportunity for repentance and good deeds is available now, in this life. The gates of mercy are wide open in this world — Allah accepts the repentance of His servants at any moment before death. But on that Day, the gates will be shut, and regret will be of no avail.
A Call to Reflection:
Dear reader, this verse is a wake-up call from the Most Merciful. Allah is telling us that the Hereafter is certain, and the choices we make today will determine our dwelling tomorrow. Do not wait until you see the Fire with your own eyes to believe — for then, belief will not benefit you. Turn to Allah now with sincere repentance, perform the deeds He loves, and seek His pleasure while the door of acceptance is still open. The One who created you loves to forgive; He says in His Book: *"Say, 'O My servants who have transgressed against themselves, do not despair of the mercy of Allah. Indeed, Allah forgives all sins. Indeed, it is He who is the Forgiving, the Merciful'"* (Az-Zumar 39:53). Seize this precious moment — for tomorrow, the request for a second chance will be denied, but today, the call to forgiveness is being answered.
