Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- "Falanudhiqanna" — We will surely make them taste; an emphatic promise of punishment.
- "Adhaban shadeedan" — A severe, overwhelming punishment.
- "Walanajziyannahum" — And We will certainly repay them.
- "Aswa'a allathee kanoo ya'maloon" — The worst of what they used to do; meaning the most evil of their deeds, which they will be requited for accordingly.
Tafsir (Explanation):
This verse delivers a solemn, unbreakable promise from Allah to those who reject faith and persist in disbelief. The "severe punishment" they will taste is the torment of the Fire in the Hereafter, and in this world too, they will face humiliation and loss as a consequence of their arrogance and denial of the truth. The verse emphasizes that their recompense will not be merely proportional to their sins, but will match the very worst of their deeds — their shirk (associating partners with Allah), their mockery of the messengers, and their persistent evil actions. This is not injustice on Allah's part; rather, it is perfect justice, for they were given clear guidance, sound intellect, and ample time to reflect, yet they chose falsehood over truth.
The phrasing "We will surely make them taste" uses a sensory metaphor — tasting — to convey that the punishment will be directly experienced, undeniable, and inescapable. It is a direct response to the disbelievers' claim in the preceding verses that they would not be punished and that their hearts were veiled from the call of the Prophet (peace be upon him). Allah declares that their scheming will not protect them; His promise of retribution is certain.
Da'wah Reflection:
This verse is a powerful reminder of Allah's absolute justice and His awareness of every deed, hidden or open. For the believer, it instills awe and humility, urging us to constantly check our actions and repent before it is too late. For the one who is distant from faith, it is a merciful warning — a call to return to the Creator before the severe punishment becomes a reality. Allah does not wish to punish His servants; He sent messengers and revealed scriptures out of mercy, so that we may choose the path of salvation. The door of repentance remains open until the moment of death. Let this verse be a wake-up call: no one can escape Allah's reckoning, but His mercy is vast for those who turn back to Him sincerely. Embrace the truth today, and you will find peace in this life and safety in the next.
