Key Words and Their Meanings:
- لَا تَسْمَعُوا (lā tasma‘ū): Do not listen; here it means do not heed or pay attention with the intent to accept.
- وَالْغَوْا (walghaw): Make noise, clamor, shout, or engage in idle, nonsensical talk—raising voices with meaningless chatter, whistling, or poetry to disrupt.
- تَغْلِبُونَ (taghlibūn): You may overcome or prevail (over the Prophet and his recitation).
Explanation of the Verse:
When the disbelievers found themselves unable to counter the Qur’an with logic or argument, they resorted to a desperate and shameful tactic. They conspired among themselves, advising one another: “Do not lend your ears to this Qur’an, and do not submit to its commands. Instead, when Muhammad recites it, raise a loud clamor—shout, whistle, and fill the air with meaningless words and idle talk—so that you may drown out his voice and overcome him. Perhaps then he will stop reciting, and we will be rid of this call.”
This was not merely a rejection of the truth; it was an active, organized effort to suppress the divine message through noise and mockery. They knew deep down that the Qur’an’s words carried a power that could move hearts, so they tried to block the ears of the people and confuse the atmosphere. Yet, despite their schemes, the Qur’an continued to spread, and their efforts only exposed their own weakness and fear of the truth.
Reflection and Call to the Reader:
How telling it is that the enemies of truth, when faced with a message so compelling, had no weapon but noise! They could not answer the Qur’an with a single verse, so they tried to silence it with clamor. This reveals the profound strength of the Qur’an—a book that has survived every attempt to suppress it, from the days of the Prophet to this very moment. Today, the Qur’an is recited in every corner of the earth, and its light only grows brighter.
Dear reader, do not be among those who turn away from this divine call. Open your heart to its words, for they are a mercy and a guidance. The disbelievers tried to block their ears, but you have the chance to listen with sincerity. Let the Qur’an speak to your soul, and you will find in it peace, purpose, and a path to eternal success. The noise of this world will fade, but the words of Allah remain forever—so choose to hear them, and let them transform your life.
