Translation — Tafsir

Word Meanings:

  • Bashīran (بَشِيرًا): A bringer of glad tidings — one who conveys good news of reward and success.
  • Nadhīran (نَذِيرًا): A warner — one who cautions against punishment and consequences.
  • Aʿraḍa (أَعْرَضَ): Turned away — indicating deliberate avoidance and rejection.
  • Lā yasmaʿūn (لَا يَسْمَعُونَ): They do not hear — meaning they do not listen with acceptance or benefit.

Explanation of the Verse:

This verse continues the description of the Qur’an, which was revealed as a source of both hope and caution. It is *bashīran* — a bearer of glad tidings for those who believe in it and act upon its guidance, promising them success in this world and eternal bliss in the Hereafter. At the same time, it is *nadhīran* — a warner for those who reject it, alerting them to the severe consequences of disbelief and disobedience, both in this life and in the life to come.

Yet, despite this perfect balance of mercy and warning, the majority of the people turned away from it. They did not merely ignore it — they actively rejected it, refusing to even lend their ears to its message. Their "not hearing" was not a physical inability, but a spiritual one: they heard the words, but their hearts were sealed, and they did not listen with the intention to understand, accept, or act. This is the deafness of the soul — the most tragic form of blindness, for it deprives a person of the very guidance that could save them.

A Call to Reflection:

Dear reader, pause and reflect: the Qur’an is not a book of mere stories or laws — it is a living conversation between the Creator and His creation. It speaks to you personally, offering you glad tidings that can fill your heart with peace, and warnings that can protect you from ruin. The doors of mercy are wide open; all you need is a sincere ear and an open heart. Do not be among those who turn away, for the loss is entirely yours. Respond to this divine call today, and you will find a light that illuminates your path in this world and the next.
