  • Rawakid (رَوَاكِدَ): Stationary, motionless, fixed in place—referring to ships that remain still upon the water.
  • Zahrhi (ظَهْرِهِ): Its surface, i.e., the surface of the sea.

Explanation of the Verse:

This verse continues to unveil the magnificent signs of Allah’s power and sovereignty. After mentioning the ships that sail upon the sea—majestic like mountains—Allah now draws our attention to His absolute control over all things. If He wills, He can simply calm the wind that drives those ships, and in an instant, they would become motionless, floating still upon the surface of the sea, unable to move an inch. No human effort, no engine, no sail could set them in motion again unless Allah permits it.

This is a profound reminder that the very forces of nature—wind, water, and motion—are all under Allah’s command. The same wind that carries ships across vast oceans can be silenced in a moment, leaving them stranded and helpless. This demonstrates that all power and authority belong to Allah alone, and that human beings, despite their technological advancements, are utterly dependent on His will.

In this phenomenon—the sailing of ships and their coming to a standstill—there are clear, undeniable signs and lessons for every person who is patient in times of hardship and grateful in times of ease. Such a person reflects deeply upon these scenes and recognizes the hand of Allah behind every movement and stillness. The patient one does not despair when the wind stops, knowing that Allah’s wisdom prevails. The grateful one does not forget the Giver when the wind blows favorably, acknowledging that every blessing comes from Him.

This verse beautifully ties together two essential qualities of a true believer: sabr (patience) and shukr (gratitude). The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said: *“Amazing is the affair of the believer. Verily, all of his affairs are good for him. If something good happens to him, he is grateful, and that is good for him. If something harmful happens to him, he is patient, and that is good for him.”* (Sahih Muslim)

Dear reader, reflect upon this verse and let it strengthen your connection with your Creator. When you see a ship gliding across the sea, remember that it is Allah who drives it. When you see it still, remember that it is Allah who halts it. And in both states, there is a lesson for your heart: be patient in adversity, be grateful in prosperity, and know that your Lord is in full control of every affair. This is the path to true peace and contentment in this life and the next.

📜 Verse 31-35 — Ash-Shura

And you will not cause failure [to Allah] upon the earth. And you have not besides Allah any protector or helper.
And of His signs are the ships in the sea, like mountains.
If He willed, He could still the wind, and they would remain motionless on its surface. Indeed in that are signs for everyone patient and grateful.
Or He could destroy them for what they earned; but He pardons much.
And [that is so] those who dispute concerning Our signs may know that for them there is no place of escape.
