Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- Al-Jawāri (الْجَوَارِ): The ships that sail and glide upon the water.
- Al-A‘lām (الْأَعْلَام): Mountains; also used to describe anything tall and elevated, such as towering landmarks.
Explanation of the Verse:
Among the magnificent signs of Allah—proofs of His boundless power and supreme authority—are the great ships that sail upon the sea, appearing like towering mountains upon the horizon. These vessels, vast in size and heavy with cargo, glide effortlessly across the waves, driven by winds that Allah has subjected to His command. Their movement is not a random accident, nor a product of nature’s own will, but a deliberate act of the Almighty, who has harnessed the forces of creation to serve humanity.
Reflect deeply, dear reader: how is it that a massive structure of iron and wood, heavier than any mountain, can float and traverse the depths of the ocean? It is Allah who has made the water capable of carrying these ships, and the wind their obedient servant. And if He so wills, He can still the wind in an instant, leaving the ships motionless upon the surface of the sea—yet another sign of His absolute control over all things.
In this verse, Allah calls upon us to observe the world around us with the eyes of the heart. The ships that sail are not merely vessels of trade and travel; they are moving lessons, floating proofs of the Creator’s wisdom and might. For every soul that is patient in obedience to Allah and grateful for His countless blessings, these signs are clear and undeniable. They remind us that the same Power which moves the ships across the seas is the Power that sustains us, hears our prayers, and will one day raise us from our graves.
So let the believer look upon the sea and its ships with awe and humility, recognizing in them the hand of the Most Merciful. Let this sight increase your faith, deepen your gratitude, and draw you closer to the One who has made all things subservient to you—not because you deserve it, but because His mercy encompasses everything. Indeed, in the ebb and flow of the tides and the journey of every ship, there is a message for those who ponder: Allah is the Sovereign of all creation, and to Him alone belongs all praise.
