Word Meanings:

  • Yaʿshu (يَعْشُ): To turn away blindly, to avert one's sight or heart from something, to disregard or neglect it without proper consideration.
  • Dhikr al-Raḥmān (ذِكْرِ الرَّحْمَٰنِ): The Reminder of the Most Merciful — referring specifically to the Qur'an, which is the ultimate reminder and guidance from Allah.
  • Nuqayyiḍ (نُقَيِّضْ): We appoint, assign, or cause to be paired with — meaning We make it happen as a consequence.
  • Qarīn (قَرِين): An inseparable companion, a constant associate who never leaves one's side.

Explanation of the Verse:

This noble verse reveals a profound spiritual law that operates in the unseen realm. When a person deliberately turns away from the Qur'an — the Reminder of the Most Merciful — and refuses to heed its guidance, fearing not its warnings nor embracing its light, Allah, in His perfect justice, appoints for that person a devil as an inseparable companion. This is not a random punishment but a direct consequence of one's own choice: the person who shuns divine guidance is left to be accompanied by a satanic whisperer who constantly misleads him, beautifying sin and discouraging righteousness.

The verse speaks of those who look at the Qur'an without true reflection — their gaze is superficial, their hearts are sealed, and they do not benefit from its verses. Such a person, by his own turning away, opens the door for a devil to become his constant partner in this worldly life. This devil does not merely suggest evil occasionally; he clings to the person, never leaving him alone, pushing him further into misguidance and away from every good path.

This is a profound warning and a mirror for self-reflection. The Qur'an is not merely a book to be recited; it is a living reminder that illuminates the heart and protects the soul. Whoever clings to it is safeguarded by Allah's mercy, and whoever abandons it is left vulnerable to the whispers of Shayṭān.

A Call to Reflection and Action:

Dear reader, pause and examine your relationship with the Qur'an. Is it your constant companion, your guide in times of confusion, your light in moments of darkness? Or have you allowed the distractions of this world to veil you from its radiant truths?

The promise of Allah is true: those who turn away from His Reminder will find themselves accompanied by devils who lead them astray. But equally true is His promise to those who draw near: He will protect them, guide them, and grant them companionship of the righteous.

Let this verse be a wake-up call. Open the Book of Allah today, not just with your eyes, but with your heart. Reflect on its verses, act upon its commands, and let it transform your life. For in doing so, you are not merely reading words — you are forging a bond with the Most Merciful Himself, and no devil can ever break that bond.

The choice is yours: the companionship of a devil that leads to ruin, or the companionship of the Qur'an that leads to eternal success. Choose wisely, for your choice today shapes your tomorrow — both in this world and the next.

And for their houses - doors and couches [of silver] upon which to recline
And gold ornament. But all that is not but the enjoyment of worldly life. And the Hereafter with your Lord is for the righteous.
And whoever is blinded from remembrance of the Most Merciful - We appoint for him a devil, and he is to him a companion.
And indeed, the devils avert them from the way [of guidance] while they think that they are [rightly] guided
Until, when he comes to Us [at Judgement], he says [to his companion], "Oh, I wish there was between me and you the distance between the east and west - how wretched a companion."
