Translation — Tafsir

Word Meanings:

  • Yasuddūnahum (يَصُدُّونَهُمْ): They turn them away, block them, or divert them from the path.
  • Al-Sabīl (السَّبِيل): The way, meaning the straight path of truth and guidance — the religion of Allah.
  • Muhtadūn (مُّهْتَدُونَ): Those who are rightly guided, on true guidance.

Tafsir (Explanation):

This verse continues to describe the fate of those who turn away from the Reminder — the Qur’an — and attach themselves to the devils as companions. Allah informs us that these devils do not merely accompany such people passively; they actively and persistently block them from the path of truth and righteousness. They beautify falsehood in their hearts, making sin appear attractive and obedience to Allah seem burdensome or undesirable. They work tirelessly to keep them away from the straight path — the path of faith, worship, and submission to Allah alone.

Yet — and this is the tragic irony — those who are thus led astray are completely unaware of their condition. They actually believe they are on the right path, that they are guided and correct in what they do. The devil has so thoroughly deceived them that they see darkness as light and misguidance as guidance. This delusion is the most dangerous state a person can be in, because it prevents any possibility of repentance or self-correction. When a person believes they are right, they will never seek the truth, and when they believe they are guided, they will never ask for direction.

This is a profound warning for every soul: the greatest deception is not sin itself, but the conviction that one’s sin is righteousness. The Qur’an repeatedly calls us to self-reflection, to question our assumptions, and to measure our actions against the divine standard — not against our own desires or the whispers of the devil.

A Call to Reflection:

Dear reader, how often do we find ourselves confident in our choices, certain that we are on the right path, while the Qur’an and the Sunnah may point elsewhere? The devil does not come to us saying, “Follow me to destruction.” He comes disguised as a guide, making wrong feel right and right feel heavy. The protection lies in clinging to the Book of Allah and the authentic teachings of His Messenger ﷺ, and in constantly asking Allah for steadfastness and clarity. Never be too proud of your own understanding — for the one who thinks he is guided is often the farthest from guidance. Seek Allah’s light, and He will show you the way.

And gold ornament. But all that is not but the enjoyment of worldly life. And the Hereafter with your Lord is for the righteous.
And whoever is blinded from remembrance of the Most Merciful - We appoint for him a devil, and he is to him a companion.
And indeed, the devils avert them from the way [of guidance] while they think that they are [rightly] guided
Until, when he comes to Us [at Judgement], he says [to his companion], "Oh, I wish there was between me and you the distance between the east and west - how wretched a companion."
And never will it benefit you that Day, when you have wronged, that you are [all] sharing in the punishment.
