Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- Al-Atheem (الْأَثِيمِ): The one who is deeply entrenched in sin and wrongdoing; the great sinner, particularly the one who commits the gravest of sins — associating partners with Allah (shirk).
Tafsir (Explanation):
This verse refers to the fruit of the accursed tree, Az-Zaqqum, which grows from the very depths of Hellfire. Its bitter, foul fruit is the food of the wicked sinner — the one who has immersed himself in transgression and rebellion against his Lord. The greatest of all sins, and the one that seals a person's fate, is shirk — the act of associating partners with Allah, may He be exalted. Such a person, who persisted in disbelief and evil deeds throughout his worldly life, will be given this repulsive, loathsome food in the Hereafter as a just recompense for his arrogance and disobedience.
This is a stark and terrifying image that should awaken every soul: the food of the sinner is not a delicacy, but a punishment in itself. The tree of Zaqqum is described elsewhere in the Qur'an as "the tree that comes forth from the bottom of the Hellfire" (As-Saffat: 64), and its fruits resemble the heads of devils — a fitting meal for those who followed the whispers of Satan.
A Call to Reflection:
Dear reader, this verse is a profound reminder of the consequences of our choices. Allah, in His infinite mercy, has warned us clearly so that we may turn back to Him before it is too late. He does not wish to punish us; rather, He desires our success and salvation. The path of sin leads only to regret and suffering, while the path of faith and righteousness leads to gardens of delight, where the believers will be honored with fruits and pleasures beyond imagination.
Let this verse be a turning point in your heart. Ask yourself: which food do I wish to eat on that Day? The bitter fruit of Zaqqum, or the sweet, everlasting delights of Paradise? The choice is yours, and the time to choose is now. Turn to your Lord with sincere repentance, for He is the Most Forgiving, the Most Merciful, and He accepts those who return to Him with open arms. Do not let the fleeting pleasures of this world deceive you — for the Hereafter is far better and more enduring.
