Surah Ad-Dukhan — Verse 43

Tafsir (Explanation):

Allah Almighty informs us of a terrifying reality: there is a tree called *Zaqqum*, which He has caused to grow from the very depths of the Hellfire. This is not a tree of life or nourishment—it is a tree of punishment and torment. Its roots are embedded in the blazing fire itself, and its fruit is the food of those who are steeped in sin and transgression. The greatest of these sins, and the most severe, is *shirk*—associating partners with Allah in worship. This tree is so vile that its very mention was a source of mockery for the disbelievers, yet it is an absolute truth that will manifest on the Day of Judgment.

A Da'wah Reflection:

How immense is the mercy of Allah that He has warned us clearly of this punishment, so that we may avoid it! He did not leave us in ignorance—He sent His messengers, revealed His books, and made the path to Paradise clear. The *Zaqqum* is a reminder that our choices in this life have eternal consequences. But alongside this warning, Allah opens the door of repentance to every sinner, no matter how great their sins. The Prophet ﷺ said: "Allah stretches out His Hand at night so that the sinner of the day may repent, and He stretches out His Hand in the day so that the sinner of the night may repent" (Muslim). So let this verse be a call to turn back to Allah sincerely, to purify our faith from any form of *shirk*, and to strive in obedience—for the One who created the Hellfire also created Paradise, and His mercy encompasses all things. Do not let a single day pass without renewing your covenant with Allah, for you do not know when your last breath will come.
