Word Meanings:

  • Ayat Allah (آيَاتِ اللَّهِ): The signs, proofs, and revelations of Allah — including the Qur'an and the divine evidences He sent through His messengers.
  • Huzuwan (هُزُوًا): Mockery, ridicule, and jesting — treating something with contempt and making fun of it.
  • Gharra (غَرَّتْكُمُ): Deceived, deluded, and misled — the false allure that tricked them into heedlessness.
  • Yastu'tabun (يُسْتَعْتَبُونَ): They are asked to appease or please (their Lord) — meaning, they are not given the chance to return and make amends.

Explanation of the Verse:

This verse addresses the disbelievers on the Day of Judgment, telling them that the punishment they now face is the direct consequence of their own actions in this worldly life. The word "that" (dhalikum) points to the severe torment and humiliation they are experiencing — and it is all because of two fatal errors they committed.

First, they took the signs of Allah — His verses, His messengers, His clear proofs — as a subject of mockery and jest. Instead of reflecting on these signs with humility and seeking guidance, they laughed at them, ridiculed them, and turned them into entertainment. They did not merely reject the truth; they actively belittled it and made it an object of scorn.

Second, they were deceived by the life of this world. Its glittering attractions, fleeting pleasures, wealth, status, and desires blinded them to the reality of the Hereafter. They became so engrossed in the temporary that they forgot the eternal. This deception led them to deny the resurrection, the reckoning, and the rewards and punishments of the afterlife — saying, as mentioned in other verses, "There is no life but our present life; we die and live, and nothing destroys us except time."

Now, on this Day, the reality they denied has become undeniable. But it is too late. The verse concludes with a devastating finality: "So this Day they will not be brought out of it (the Fire), nor will they be asked to appease [Allah]." They will not be removed from the Hellfire — their punishment is eternal and inescapable. And they will not be given the opportunity to return to the world, repent, and do good deeds. No excuses will be accepted, no second chances will be granted, and no way to please their Lord will be offered — because the time for all that has passed.

A Call to Reflection:

Dear reader, this verse carries a profound warning that should awaken every heart. The mockery of Allah's signs is a dangerous path that leads to destruction — and the deception of worldly life is the veil that blinds us to this danger. How many of us, today, find ourselves laughing at religious matters, belittling the commands of Allah, or treating the Qur'an as something to be recited without reflection, let alone mocked or ignored? And how many of us have been so captivated by the pursuit of wealth, status, and pleasure that we forget the purpose of our existence?

The good news is that you are still alive, still breathing, and still have the opportunity to turn back. Unlike those addressed in this verse, your repentance is accepted, your excuses can be heard, and your Lord is waiting for you with open mercy. Do not let the deception of this world rob you of the eternal bliss of Paradise. Take the signs of Allah seriously — ponder them, act upon them, and let them transform your life. The door of repentance is open now, but it will not remain open forever. Seize this moment before it is too late, and let the Qur'an be your guide, your light, and your salvation.

And the evil consequences of what they did will appear to them, and they will be enveloped by what they used to ridicule.
And it will be said, "Today We will forget you as you forgot the meeting of this Day of yours, and your refuge is the Fire, and for you there are no helpers.
That is because you took the verses of Allah in ridicule, and worldly life deluded you." So that Day they will not be removed from it, nor will they be asked to appease [Allah].
Then, to Allah belongs [all] praise - Lord of the heavens and Lord of the earth, Lord of the worlds.
And to Him belongs [all] grandeur within the heavens and the earth, and He is the Exalted in Might, the Wise.
