Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- Al-Hawariyyun (الحواريون): The pure, sincere disciples of Prophet Jesus (peace be upon him), who were his closest and most devoted followers.
- Ma'idah (مائدة): A table spread with food, or a tray laden with provisions sent down from heaven.
- Hal Yastati'u (هل يستطيع): Literally "is your Lord able to," but in this context it means "will He respond to our request" or "is He willing to grant this."
Tafsir (Explanation):
In this blessed verse, Allah recounts a profound moment in the history of faith—when the disciples of Prophet Jesus (peace be upon him) approached him with a remarkable request. They said: "O Jesus, son of Mary, will your Lord consent to send down upon us a table spread with food from the sky?"
This was not a question born of doubt or disbelief in Allah's power—for these were sincere believers who had witnessed Jesus's miracles by Allah's leave. Rather, it was a deep human longing for a tangible, visible sign that would settle their hearts and strengthen their certainty. They wanted to witness with their own eyes a heavenly provision, a direct response from the Almighty, so that their faith would be elevated to a level of absolute conviction.
Prophet Jesus (peace be upon him), with his profound wisdom and prophetic insight, immediately sensed the potential danger in such a request. He did not rebuke them harshly, nor did he dismiss their desire. Instead, he guided them with gentleness and wisdom, saying: "Fear Allah, if you are truly believers."
His words carried a beautiful lesson: True faith does not require constant miraculous signs. The believer's heart finds contentment in Allah's promise, trusts in His wisdom, and submits to His decree. Jesus was gently reminding them that their request, while not sinful in itself, could become a trial for them—for if they received this sign and then failed to be grateful, or if they fell into arrogance after witnessing it, the consequences would be severe.
He also taught them a profound principle: Instead of asking for extraordinary miracles, they should place their trust in Allah for their daily sustenance. Allah provides for His servants in ways they often do not perceive. The believer's focus should be on obedience and gratitude, not on demanding spectacular displays of divine power.
This story carries a timeless message for all of us: We must approach Allah with humility and trust, not with demands. Our faith should be firm and content, knowing that Allah's wisdom is greater than our limited understanding. When we ask of Allah, we should ask for what is beneficial for our faith and our hereafter, and we should always remember that the greatest miracle is the guidance He has already placed in our hearts.
The verse also beautifully demonstrates the compassionate nature of prophetic guidance—Jesus did not abandon his disciples in their confusion, but patiently corrected their understanding, drawing them closer to true faith and sincere reliance upon Allah alone.
