Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- Jabbār (بِجَبَّارٍ): One who compels or forces others by overpowering them; a tyrant or dominator.
- Waʿīd (وَعِيدِ): The warning of punishment and divine retribution that Allah has promised for those who disbelieve and disobey.
Explanation of the Verse:
Allah, the Exalted, addresses His Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) with words of immense comfort and reassurance, while simultaneously delivering a stern, yet veiled, warning to the disbelievers. Allah says: "We are most knowing of what they say." This means that Allah is fully aware of every word uttered by the polytheists of Makkah—their mockery, their lies, their accusations against the Prophet, and their denial of the Quran. Nothing is hidden from Him, and this serves as a double-edged message: it is a solace for the Prophet, assuring him that Allah hears all and will deal with them justly, and it is a threat to the disbelievers, reminding them that their words are recorded and will be accounted for.
Then Allah continues: "And you, [O Muhammad], are not over them a tyrant." This clarifies the nature of the Prophet's mission. He was not sent to compel people into faith by force or to dominate them. His role is not that of a coercer or a ruler who imposes belief. Rather, he is a messenger, a warner, and a bearer of glad tidings. The Prophet's duty is to convey the message clearly and sincerely, leaving the matter of guidance entirely to Allah. This verse also carries a subtle rebuke to those who accused the Prophet of being a tyrant or seeker of power—he is innocent of such charges, for his heart is filled with mercy and his sole aim is the salvation of humanity.
Finally, Allah instructs: "So remind with the Quran whoever fears My warning." This is the divine directive to focus the Prophet's efforts on those who have receptive hearts—those who fear Allah's punishment and are mindful of the consequences of their actions. Such people are the ones who will benefit from the reminder, for their hearts are open to reflection and their souls yearn for truth. The Quran is the tool of this reminder, a book of profound wisdom and guidance that penetrates the hearts of the sincere. As for those who have sealed their hearts with arrogance and denial, they will not be moved by any reminder, for they have chosen blindness over sight.
A Daʿwah Reflection:
This verse carries a timeless lesson for every believer and caller to Islam. It teaches us that our role is not to force people into faith, but to present the truth with wisdom, patience, and compassion. The Prophet (peace be upon him) was the greatest of all teachers, yet even he could not guide those whom Allah willed to remain astray. This relieves us of the burden of results—we are only responsible for the delivery of the message, not the outcome.
Moreover, the verse directs us to focus our energy on those who are open to guidance—those who fear Allah and long for His mercy. When we encounter hearts that are receptive, we must pour our efforts into nurturing them with the Quran, for it is the light that illuminates the darkest of paths. The Quran is not merely a book to be recited; it is a living guide that transforms lives, softens hearts, and elevates souls.
Let this verse inspire us to be gentle in our approach, sincere in our intentions, and unwavering in our commitment to share the beauty of Islam. For the one who fears Allah's warning is the one whose heart trembles at the mention of His name, and such a heart is ready to receive the greatest treasure of all—the guidance of the Quran. May Allah make us among those who both fear His warning and strive to remind others of His mercy.
