Translation — Tafsir

Word Meanings:

  • Bayt (بَيْتٍ): A household or family, referring here to the dwelling and its inhabitants as a unit of faith.
  • Muslimīn (الْمُسْلِمِينَ): Those who submit to Allah in obedience and monotheism — true believers.

Tafsir (Explanation):

In this verse, Allah informs us about the outcome of His inspection of the people of the town to which Prophet Lut (Lot, peace be upon him) was sent. After the angels visited Lut in the form of handsome guests, and the wicked people of the city rushed to commit their abominable acts, Allah reveals that when He searched that entire community — a community steeped in corruption, immorality, and defiance of His commands — He found not a single household of believers except one: the household of Lut. This was not merely a house of nominal faith, but a home of sincere submission to Allah, where Lut and his believing family members — including his daughters who followed his call — stood firm amidst a society that had turned away from every divine value.

This verse carries a profound lesson: the scale of corruption in that town was so overwhelming that only a single believing household remained. Yet, that one household was enough for Allah to send His mercy and salvation. It shows that the value of faith is not measured by numbers, but by sincerity and steadfastness. Even when surrounded by evil, a single family that clings to Allah can be the vessel of His grace and the recipient of His protection.

Da‘wah Reflection:

Dear reader, ponder this scene: an entire city lost in sin, and only one home shining with the light of faith. Allah did not abandon that home; rather, He saved it from the punishment that destroyed the rest. This teaches us that no matter how corrupt the world around us becomes, our home can be a sanctuary of faith. If you find yourself feeling alone in your commitment to Islam — among friends, colleagues, or even relatives — remember that Lut was alone with his family, yet Allah honored him and made his household the exception of salvation. Do not underestimate the power of a single believing home. It can be the means by which Allah’s mercy descends upon you and your loved ones. Strive to make your house a place where the Qur’an is recited, where prayer is established, and where love for Allah fills every corner — for such a home is never forgotten by Allah, and His protection is never far from it.

Marked in the presence of your Lord for the transgressors."
So We brought out whoever was in the cities of the believers.
And We found not within them other than a [single] house of Muslims.
And We left therein a sign for those who fear the painful punishment.
And in Moses [was a sign], when We sent him to Pharaoh with clear authority.
