Translation — Tafsir
Key Words and Their Meanings:
- Al-Bahr (البحر): The sea or ocean.
- Al-Masjūr (المسجور): This word carries two primary meanings among the scholars of Tafsir: (1) The sea that is filled to the brim with water, and (2) The sea that will be set ablaze or kindled as fire on the Day of Judgment. Both meanings are authentic and complementary.
The Explanation of the Verse:
In this verse, Allah (Glorified and Exalted be He) takes an oath by the sea that is filled with water, vast and mighty in its expanse. The word "Al-Masjūr" describes a sea that is overflowing, fully charged with its waters, covering the earth in its immense power and depth.
Some scholars also interpret this as a reference to the state of the sea on the Day of Resurrection, when it will be turned into a blazing fire, as mentioned in another verse: "And when the seas are set ablaze" (At-Takwir: 6). This dual meaning highlights both the current reality of the sea as a sign of Allah's creation and its future transformation as a sign of His power over all things.
The oath by the sea points to the greatness of Allah's creation and His absolute control over it. The sea, with its massive waves, hidden depths, and countless creatures, stands as a living testimony to the wisdom and might of its Creator. It is a reminder that the One who filled this vast ocean with water and holds it within its boundaries is the same One who sent down the Qur'an and revealed His message to humanity.
A Da'wah Reflection:
Dear reader, when you look at the ocean stretching to the horizon, remember that its Creator has taken an oath by it in His Holy Book. This is not a trivial matter—it is a call to reflect on the majesty of Allah. The sea that you see today, calm or stormy, will one day be set ablaze by His command. If Allah can control such a massive body of water, filling it and later turning it into fire, then surely He is capable of resurrecting you after death and holding you accountable for your deeds.
The oath of Allah by His creation is an invitation to you: open your heart to the Qur'an, for it is the book that guides to the truth. Do not let the distractions of this world—like the waves of the sea, constantly moving—keep you away from the shore of faith. Turn to your Lord before that Day comes when the seas are set ablaze and every soul is recompensed for what it has earned. Indeed, in the signs of Allah—from the towering mountains to the vast seas—there is a clear proof for every heart that seeks the truth.
