Translation — Tafsir

Word Meanings:

  • Al-Sidrah (السدرة): The Lote Tree, specifically the Sidrat al-Muntahā (the Lote Tree of the Utmost Boundary) located in the seventh heaven.
  • Yaghshā (يغشى): To cover, envelop, or overwhelm.
  • Mā yaghshā (ما يغشى): That which covers it — left intentionally vague to indicate something of immense, indescribable magnitude.

Tafsir (Explanation):

This verse describes a moment of profound majesty during the Prophet Muhammad’s (peace be upon him) night journey and ascension (al-Mi‘rāj). At the Lote Tree of the Utmost Boundary — a tree of immense size and beauty in the seventh heaven, beyond which no creation may pass — something extraordinary occurred. Allah says: "When there covered the Lote Tree that which covered [it]." The exact nature of what enveloped the tree is not described, and this deliberate ambiguity is a mark of its grandeur. It was a divine manifestation, a covering of light, awe, and glory so immense that no human mind can comprehend or describe it. Some scholars suggest it was a host of angels, or a divine light, or a command of Allah that overwhelmed the scene. What is certain is that it was a sight of unparalleled magnificence, witnessed by the Prophet (peace be upon him) as part of the greatest signs of his Lord.

This moment was not merely a spectacle; it was a testament to the closeness and honor bestowed upon the Prophet (peace be upon him). He was granted the privilege of witnessing realities that no other creature has ever seen — the wonders of paradise, the horrors of hell, and the supreme signs of Allah’s power and wisdom. His heart did not waver, his eyes did not stray, and his mind remained steadfast in awe and obedience. This verse reminds us that Allah’s creation contains mysteries far beyond our perception, and that the Prophet (peace be upon him) was chosen to witness them as a proof of his truthfulness and a mercy to humanity.

A Da‘wah Reflection:

Dear reader, ponder this: if a single tree in Allah’s creation can be enveloped in such overwhelming glory that words fail to describe it, then how great must be the Creator Himself? This verse invites you to expand your imagination beyond the limits of this world. The Prophet (peace be upon him) saw these wonders not for his own sake alone, but to bring back the glad tidings of Allah’s mercy, the reality of the afterlife, and the urgency of turning to Him. If you seek true peace and certainty, look to the example of this noble Prophet — a man of honesty and integrity, who conveyed nothing but the truth. His journey reminds us that this life is but a fleeting moment, and that the eternal bliss of paradise awaits those who believe and do good. Let this verse awaken in your heart a longing for that higher reality, and let it inspire you to draw closer to Allah, the Lord of all worlds, who has prepared for His righteous servants what no eye has seen, no ear has heard, and no human heart has ever conceived.
