Word Meanings:

  • Al-Hadith (الْحَدِيثِ): The speech, message, or discourse — referring here to the Qur'an itself.
  • Ta'jabūn (تَعْجَبُونَ): You wonder, marvel, or express astonishment — in this context, with an attitude of denial and mockery.

Explanation of the Verse:

This verse addresses the polytheists of Makkah with a tone of gentle rebuke and profound questioning: "Do you then wonder at this message?" The "message" is the Qur'an — the final revelation from Allah, the Creator of the heavens and the earth. The question is rhetorical, designed to make them pause and reflect: What is there in this Qur'an that should cause you astonishment? Is it its truth? Is it its eloquence? Is it its guidance?

The astonishment they displayed was not one of admiration or reverence, but of denial and ridicule. They found it strange that a human being would receive revelation from Allah, and they responded with laughter, mockery, and turning away. The verse gently challenges their reaction: Why do you not weep instead — out of fear of Allah's warnings and awe of His majesty? Why do you not take heed of the profound truths being conveyed to you?

The Qur'an is not a cause for mockery; it is a cause for reflection, humility, and submission. It calls humanity to the worship of the One True God, to righteousness, and to the awareness of the Day of Judgment. Those who truly understand its weight respond with reverence, tears, and obedience — not with laughter and dismissal.

A Da'wah Reflection:

Dear reader, pause for a moment and consider: When the Qur'an is recited, what is your reaction? Is it a passing glance, a hurried listen, or a heart that trembles with the remembrance of Allah? The Qur'an is the greatest gift from your Lord — a book that contains your guidance, your purpose, and your salvation. It is not a book to be taken lightly or mocked, but a light to illuminate your path in this world and the next.

Allah invites you to respond to this message not with wonderment and rejection, but with faith and submission. He calls you to prostrate before Him, to surrender your affairs to Him, and to find peace in His remembrance. The same Qur'an that the disbelievers mocked is the very book that can transform your life, elevate your soul, and lead you to eternal success.

So let your heart soften, let your eyes shed tears of gratitude and awe, and let your limbs obey the command of your Creator. This is the path of the righteous — a path of honor, tranquility, and ultimate victory.
