- Az-Zubur (الزُّبُرِ): The Scriptures revealed to the prophets.
Explanation of the Verse:
Allah, may He be exalted, addresses the disbelievers of Quraysh with a piercing rhetorical question that strikes at the very heart of their arrogance. He asks: "Are your disbelievers — O people of Quraysh — better, stronger, or more powerful than those disbelieving nations that came before you?" The answer is self-evident: absolutely not. The peoples of Nuh, 'Ad, Thamud, the people of Lut, and the followers of Fir'awn possessed immense strength, towering structures, advanced civilizations, and formidable armies — yet none of that saved them when Allah's punishment descended upon them. Their power crumbled like sand, their fortresses offered no protection, and their wealth and numbers proved utterly worthless against the decree of their Lord.
The verse then poses a second question, dripping with irony: "Or do you have a guarantee of immunity in the Scriptures?" This challenges the Quraysh's false sense of security. Did any of the revealed books — the Torah, the Gospel, the Psalms, or any divine scripture — ever grant them an exemption from punishment? Did any prophet bring them a written covenant stating that they would be spared the fate that befell the wicked nations before them? Of course not. No such promise exists in any heavenly book. On the contrary, the consistent message of all scriptures is that those who reject the truth and persist in disbelief will face the consequences, regardless of their tribe, lineage, or status.
This verse serves as a powerful wake-up call — a reminder that privilege, ancestry, or worldly power provides no protection against divine justice. The Quraysh took pride in their noble lineage, their custodianship of the Ka'bah, and their standing among the Arabs. Yet Allah makes it clear that these distinctions carry no weight in His scales. What mattered for the previous nations was their faith and obedience — and when they failed in that regard, their worldly honors became a witness against them rather than a shield.
A Call to Reflection and Faith:
Dear reader, ponder deeply upon this verse. Allah is not merely addressing a people of the past — He is speaking to every soul that hears this message. The question echoes through time: What makes you think you are safe? What scripture, what promise, what guarantee do you hold that shields you from the consequences of turning away from your Creator? The nations before you were given every opportunity, and when they squandered it, their end was sealed.
But here is the beauty of Allah's mercy: this warning comes not to condemn, but to save. The very fact that Allah addresses the Quraysh with this question is an invitation — a chance to reflect, to repent, and to return before it is too late. The doors of repentance remain open until the moment the angel of death arrives. The same Qur'an that warns also guides, the same Lord who punishes also forgives, and the same mercy that destroyed the arrogant saved the humble — like the believers among Nuh's people, like Musa and Harun against Fir'awn, like the few who held firm to truth amidst widespread falsehood.
Do not let pride be your downfall as it was theirs. Do not let the comforts of this world deceive you into thinking you are immune. The strongest civilizations of antiquity lie in ruins, their kings and pharaohs reduced to lessons for humanity. Yet the promise of Allah stands firm: whoever turns to Him in sincerity, He will turn to them with mercy. Whoever humbles themselves before their Lord, He will elevate them. Whoever seeks refuge in Him, He will protect them in this life and the next.
So ask yourself today: Am I better than those who came before? Do I hold a guarantee that they did not? The answer is clear — and so is the path forward. Embrace the truth, submit to your Creator, and you will find a security that no earthly power can grant and no scripture can revoke: the security of faith in the heart, and the eternal bliss of Paradise in the Hereafter.
