Key Words and Meanings:

  • "Jamee'" (جَمِيعٌ): A united, cohesive group whose affairs are in order and whose word is one.
  • "Muntasir" (مُنتَصِر): Victorious, triumphant, or one who is able to defend and protect themselves against any foe or calamity.

Explanation of the Verse:

In this verse, Allah (Glorified and Exalted be He) addresses the stubbornness and arrogance of the disbelievers of Quraysh in Makkah. After the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) warned them of the impending punishment that had befallen previous nations—like the people of Noah, ‘Ad, Thamud, and the people of Lot—they responded not with reflection or humility, but with boastful pride.

They said, in their ignorance and self-delusion: "Are we to be threatened? We are a united, powerful group, and we are victorious!" They believed that their numerical strength, their solidarity, and their strategic alliances would protect them from any divine punishment or misfortune. They thought that no enemy could overcome them, and that their collective power made them invincible.

This statement reflects a profound misunderstanding of the nature of divine power. They measured strength by numbers and worldly might, forgetting that Allah’s decree overrides all human calculations. Their claim of victory was hollow, for true victory lies only with those whom Allah supports. The verse subtly rebukes their arrogance, reminding them that their so-called unity and strength were nothing before the will of the Almighty, who had destroyed nations far mightier than them in the past.

A Call to Reflection and Faith:

This verse carries a timeless lesson for all of humanity. How often do we, too, rely on our own resources—our wealth, our connections, our numbers—and forget that ultimate power belongs to Allah alone? The disbelievers of Makkah learned this lesson the hard way, as their "united" front was shattered at the Battle of Badr, where a small, ill-equipped group of believers, with Allah’s help, overcame their mighty forces.

Dear reader, let this be a reminder that true strength is not in numbers, but in faith and reliance upon Allah. When you place your trust in Him, He suffices you against all odds. Do not be deceived by worldly power, for it is fleeting, but the support of Allah is eternal. Embrace the message of the Qur’an, and you will find a victory that no force on earth can ever defeat.

📜 Verse 42-46 — Al-Qamar

They denied Our signs, all of them, so We seized them with a seizure of one Exalted in Might and Perfect in Ability.
Are your disbelievers better than those [former ones], or have you immunity in the scripture?
Or do they say, "We are an assembly supporting [each other]"?
[Their] assembly will be defeated, and they will turn their backs [in retreat].
But the Hour is their appointment [for due punishment], and the Hour is more disastrous and more bitter.
