Translation — Tafsir

Key Words and Their Meanings:

  • Al-Muttaqeen (الْمُتَّقِينَ): Those who are mindful of Allah, who protect themselves from His displeasure by obeying His commands and avoiding His prohibitions.
  • Jannat (جَنَّاتٍ): Gardens, specifically lush, abundant gardens of Paradise.
  • Nahar (نَهَرٍ): Rivers or flowing streams of water.

Explanation of the Verse:

In this verse, Allah Almighty gives a glad tiding to His righteous servants. He declares that those who are mindful of Him—who fulfill His obligations and steer clear of what He has forbidden—will be in magnificent gardens on the Day of Judgment. These are not ordinary gardens, but the eternal gardens of Paradise, filled with every delight. Alongside these gardens, they will have flowing rivers and streams, symbolizing abundance, freshness, and unending provision. The mention of rivers here also conveys the idea of a life that is tranquil and ever-refreshing, unlike the scorching heat and hardship that the disbelievers will face.

The verse comes as a direct contrast to the fate of the wicked, who are described in the preceding verses as being in scorching fire and boiling water. This juxtaposition is a powerful reminder that the choices we make in this world determine our eternal destination. The believer’s path of patience, prayer, charity, and obedience leads to a place where no eye has seen, no ear has heard, and no human heart can imagine.

A Da'wah Reflection:

Dear reader, pause and reflect on this beautiful promise. Allah, the Most Merciful, does not ask of us anything except that which is for our own good. The path of taqwa (God-consciousness) is not a path of deprivation; rather, it is the path to true, everlasting success. When you struggle to pray on time, to lower your gaze, to speak the truth, or to give in charity, know that you are not losing anything. You are investing in a garden whose rivers will never run dry. Let this verse fill your heart with hope and determination. The temporary pleasures of this world fade, but the rivers of Paradise flow forever. So, strive today, with sincerity, to be among the muttaqeen, and you will surely find yourself, by Allah's grace, in gardens and rivers that will never end.
