Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- صَغِيرٍ (Sagheer): Small, minor — referring to deeds, words, or matters that seem insignificant.
- كَبِيرٍ (Kabeer): Great, major — referring to deeds, words, or matters of great magnitude.
- مُسْتَطَرٌ (Mustatar): Written down, inscribed, recorded — derived from the root "satara" meaning to write in lines or rows, indicating something permanently and clearly documented.
Explanation of the Verse:
This verse comes as part of a powerful sequence in Surah Al-Qamar, where Allah reminds humanity of the Day of Judgment and the absolute accountability that awaits every soul. After mentioning the fate of previous nations and the certainty of recompense, Allah declares: "And every small and great thing is written down."
This means that every single action, word, and thought — whether it appears trivial like a fleeting glance or a whispered word, or monumental like a great act of charity or a grave sin — is recorded in the Preserved Tablet (Al-Lawh Al-Mahfuz) and in the scrolls of deeds kept by the noble angels. Nothing escapes this divine documentation. The smallest speck of good or evil, the briefest moment of kindness or cruelty, the most hidden intention or the most public declaration — all are inscribed with perfect precision and will be presented on the Day of Resurrection.
This verse instills a profound sense of awareness in the believer's heart. It teaches us that we are never alone, never unobserved, and never forgotten. Allah's knowledge encompasses everything, and His recording angels miss nothing. This is not meant to frighten us into despair, but rather to awaken us to the reality of our responsibility and the immense mercy of a Lord who has given us the opportunity to fill our pages with good deeds before we meet Him.
A Da'wah Reflection:
Dear reader, ponder this beautiful truth: your Lord has honored you by recording every moment of your life. Not a single tear you shed in sincere repentance is lost, not a single smile you offered to a distressed soul is forgotten, not a single step you took toward goodness is unregistered. This divine bookkeeping is a sign of Allah's justice and His care for you. If you find your pages heavy with mistakes, know that the door of repentance is wide open — every sincere return to Allah erases what came before, and every good deed multiplies in reward. Let this verse motivate you to race toward goodness, to guard your tongue, to purify your heart, and to fill your scroll with deeds that will make you smile on the Day when all secrets are revealed. For the One who wrote it all down is the Most Merciful, and His justice is perfect, and His reward for even a mustard seed of good is beyond imagination.
