Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- Ālā’ (آلَاءِ): The countless favors, blessings, and bounties of Allah.
- Rabbi-kumā (رَبِّكُمَا): Your Lord — addressed to both humans and jinn.
- Tukadhdhibān (تُكَذِّبَانِ): You both deny or reject.
Explanation of the Verse:
This verse is a powerful rhetorical question that Allah repeats throughout Surah Ar-Rahman, addressing both mankind and jinn together. It asks: "So which of the favors of your Lord do you both deny?"
The meaning is profound: Allah has showered upon humans and jinn countless blessings — the gift of life, intellect, faith, guidance, health, provision, the heavens and the earth, the sun and the moon, the rain that brings forth sustenance, and above all, the greatest blessing of being invited to know Him and worship Him. In this specific context, the verse comes after describing the scenes of the Day of Judgment and the rewards prepared for the righteous — the gardens, the springs, the fruits, the companions, and the eternal bliss. So the question challenges both creations: with all these favors visibly and invisibly surrounding you, which one can you honestly deny?
The verse is not merely a question — it is an awakening. It stirs the conscience to recognize gratitude. When a person reflects on the sheer number of blessings they enjoy every single moment — from the air they breathe to the faith in their hearts — they realize that denial is impossible. The only fitting response is submission, gratitude, and praise.
A Da’wah Reflection:
Dear reader, pause and look around you. Your heartbeat, your sight, your ability to think and choose — all are gifts from your Lord. Even the very tongue that could utter denial is itself a blessing from Him. How can one repay such generosity? The answer is simple: by acknowledging it, by thanking the Giver, and by using these gifts in ways that please Him. Islam calls you not to a burden, but to a life of gratitude that unlocks even more of Allah’s mercy. Every blessing you enjoy is a proof of His love and care for you — so let your heart respond with love, your tongue with praise, and your limbs with obedience. Which of His favors, then, could you ever deny?
