Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- آلاء (Ālā’): Blessings, favors, and bounties.
- تُكَذِّبَانِ (Tukadhdhibān): You both deny (i.e., the two groups addressed — mankind and jinn).
Tafsir (Explanation):
This verse is a recurring refrain throughout Surah Ar-Rahman, addressed directly to both mankind and jinn — the two creations endowed with intellect and free will. Here, it follows the mention of two springs that gush forth abundantly with water, never ceasing or running dry. These are among the countless signs of Allah’s power and mercy in Paradise.
The question is rhetorical and profound: "So which of the favors of your Lord do you both deny?" It is not a genuine inquiry, but a powerful reminder that every blessing — from the springs of Paradise to the very breath you take — is a gift from Allah alone. None of these favors can be denied, for they are manifest and undeniable. The repetition of this verse throughout the surah serves as a rhythmic call to gratitude, urging both humans and jinn to reflect on the endless mercies surrounding them.
This verse teaches us that Allah’s blessings are so numerous that they cannot be counted, and the only appropriate response is gratitude and submission. The springs mentioned here symbolize the abundance and perfection of Paradise — a reward for those who believed and did righteous deeds. It also reminds us that even in this world, Allah provides water, sustenance, and countless other blessings that we often take for granted.
A Da’wah Reflection:
Dear reader — whether you are human or jinn — pause and consider: How many blessings have you received from your Lord today? The air you breathe, the food you eat, the health you enjoy, the faith in your heart — all are from Him alone. When you recognize these favors, your heart naturally fills with love for Allah, and your tongue utters: "None of Your favors, O Lord, do we deny — all praise is Yours." This verse invites you to a life of gratitude, which is the key to increased blessings, as Allah promises: *"If you are grateful, I will surely increase you [in favor]"* (Ibrahim 14:7). Embrace this gratitude, and let it transform your relationship with your Creator — for the One who grants springs in Paradise is the One who provides for you in this world, and His mercy knows no bounds.
