Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- آلاء (Ālā’): The countless blessings, favors, and bounties of Allah.
- تُكَذِّبَانِ (Tukadhdhibān): You both deny or reject (addressed to both humans and jinn).
Tafsir (Explanation):
This verse is a recurring refrain throughout Surah Ar-Rahman, addressed directly to both mankind and jinn—the two creations endowed with intellect and free will. Allah asks: "So which of the blessings of your Lord do you both deny?"
The question is rhetorical and profound. It is not a genuine inquiry seeking an answer, but rather a powerful reminder that challenges the listener to reflect. Every breath you take, every beat of your heart, the sun that rises and sets, the earth that sustains you, the water you drink, the food you eat—all of these are blessings from your Lord. They are so numerous and so continuous that they cannot be counted, as Allah says elsewhere: "And if you should count the favors of Allah, you could not enumerate them" (Ibrahim 14:34).
The repetition of this verse throughout the surah serves a beautiful purpose: it awakens the conscience. After each mention of Allah's magnificent creations—the heavens, the earth, the seas, the fruits, the gardens, the rewards of Paradise, and even the punishments of Hell—the question comes again: "So which of the blessings of your Lord do you both deny?" It is as if Allah is saying: Look at all this evidence of My mercy and power. Can you truly deny any of it?
The address to "both" (dual form) includes humans and jinn, reminding us that both communities are accountable for their gratitude. The blessings mentioned in the surah are not limited to material comforts; they include spiritual guidance, the ability to understand, the promise of Paradise, and the mercy of Allah Himself.
A Call to Reflection and Gratitude:
Dear reader, pause and consider: when was the last time you truly appreciated the blessings around you? The ability to see, to hear, to think, to walk—these are miracles you experience every moment without noticing. The greatest blessing of all is Islam itself—the guidance that gives your life meaning and purpose. When you recognize these blessings, your heart naturally fills with love for your Creator, and your tongue begins to say: "Alhamdulillah" (All praise is due to Allah).
This verse is an invitation to shift your perspective. Instead of focusing on what you lack, look at what you have been given. The One who gave you all this is the Most Merciful, the Most Generous. He does not ask for anything in return except your gratitude and obedience—and even that is for your own benefit, not His. So, which of the blessings of your Lord will you deny? None, by the will of Allah. Instead, let us be among those who say: "We believe and we thank You, O Lord of all worlds."
