Translation — Tafsir

Word Meanings:

  • Zaqqum (زَقُّوم): A specific tree mentioned in the Qur'an that grows in the depths of Hellfire. Its fruit is extremely bitter, foul-smelling, and repulsive. It is described as the worst and most detestable of all trees.
  • Shajar (شَجَر): Tree.
  • La-akiloon (لَآكِلُونَ): Certainly/indeed eating.

Tafsir (Explanation):

After mentioning the three categories of people on the Day of Judgment—the foremost in faith, the people of the right hand, and the people of the left hand—Allah now addresses the misguided deniers directly. He says: "Then indeed, O you who have strayed from the path of guidance and denied the truth of resurrection and the promises and warnings of Allah, you will certainly eat from the tree of Zaqqum."

This tree is among the most vile and abhorrent of creations. It grows in the very depths of Hellfire, yet its roots are nourished by the scorching flames. Its fruit is so bitter and repulsive that no description can fully capture its horror. The deniers will be forced to eat from it due to the extreme, unbearable hunger that will seize them on that dreadful Day. They will fill their bellies with this wretched food, and then, to quench their burning thirst, they will drink from boiling water that scalds their faces and tears their intestines apart—yet it will never satisfy their thirst, just as a camel suffering from a disease drinks endlessly without ever being quenched.

This vivid imagery serves as a powerful warning to those who reject the truth in this life. It reminds us that every action has consequences, and that the pleasures of this world—no matter how alluring—are nothing compared to the eternal realities of the Hereafter. The Qur'an presents these truths not to frighten us aimlessly, but to awaken our hearts and guide us back to the straight path before it is too late.

A Call to Reflection:

Dear reader, this verse is a mercy from Allah—a clear warning sent before the event, so that you may turn back to Him while there is still time. The door of repentance is open, and Allah's forgiveness is vast. He does not wish to punish His servants; rather, He desires for them success and eternal happiness. Let this reminder soften your heart, draw you closer to your Creator, and inspire you to live a life of faith, gratitude, and righteousness. For the one who responds to Allah's call in this world will find, on that Day, gardens beneath which rivers flow, and the pleasure of Allah, which is the greatest reward of all.
