Translation — Tafsir

Word Meanings:

  • Al-Hadith (الْحَدِيثِ): This refers to the Qur'an itself — the divine speech revealed to Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him).
  • Mudhinun (مُدْهِنُونَ): Derived from *idhan*, meaning to be lenient, to compromise, or to show indifference. In this context, it means those who are careless, dismissive, or who soften their stance toward the truth — ultimately leading to denial and mockery.

Explanation of the Verse:

Allah addresses the polytheists of Makkah with a rhetorical question that carries both rebuke and astonishment: "Is it this very discourse — this Qur'an — that you take lightly and treat with such disregard?" The verse highlights their contradictory attitude: they possess the most profound and life-changing revelation, yet they respond with negligence, mockery, and outright denial. The word *mudhinun* captures their tendency to waver, to avoid committing to the truth, and to appease others rather than submit wholeheartedly to Allah's message.

This verse serves as a powerful wake-up call. The Qur'an is not an ordinary book; it is the ultimate guidance that distinguishes right from wrong, and it addresses the deepest needs of the human soul. To treat it with indifference is to turn away from the very source of salvation. The question implies: How can you, who have been given this magnificent gift, respond with anything less than reverence, reflection, and submission?

A Da'wah Reflection:

Dear reader, pause and consider: The Qur'an is the living miracle that has transformed hearts and civilizations for over fourteen centuries. Every verse carries light, every word holds healing, and every chapter invites you closer to your Creator. When you open its pages, you are not merely reading — you are conversing with the Lord of the worlds. How then can we be among those who are *mudhinun* — careless or dismissive? Let this verse inspire you to approach the Qur'an with the awe it deserves, to ponder its meanings, and to let it reshape your life. The one who honors the Qur'an will find honor in this life and the next, while the one who turns away will find only loss. Choose today to be among those who listen, believe, and act — for this is the path to eternal success.
