Translation — Tafsir
Key Words and Their Meanings:
- Al-Mash'amah (الْمَشْأَمَةِ): The left side; refers to those who receive their records of deeds in their left hands on the Day of Judgment. It signifies the side of misfortune and loss, as opposed to the right side which is the side of honor and success.
- As-hab (أَصْحَابُ): Companions or people of; here, it refers to the people who belong to this category.
Explanation of the Verse:
After mentioning the blessed people of the right hand and their exalted status, Allah now turns to the opposite group: the companions of the left hand. These are the unfortunate souls who will receive their books of deeds in their left hands—a sign of disgrace and ruin. The verse exclaims, "What are the companions of the left hand?"—a rhetorical question that expresses utter astonishment at the severity of their condition and the horror of their fate.
These are the people who lived their lives in heedlessness, rejecting the truth, and following their desires. On the Day of Judgment, they will be driven to the left side, toward the Fire. Their punishment is not merely physical but also carries profound humiliation, as they are publicly shamed before all of creation. The Qur'anic phrasing here is not just informative; it is a powerful call to the heart: pause and reflect on what awaits those who turn away from their Creator.
A Da'wah Reflection:
This verse serves as a wake-up call for every soul. It reminds us that our deeds are being recorded, and the outcome of that record is either honor or disgrace. The companions of the left hand are not strangers—they are those who had the same opportunities as the righteous but chose to neglect their duties to Allah and His creation.
The beauty of Islam is that it always leaves the door of repentance open. No matter how far a person has strayed, Allah’s mercy is vast. But this verse warns us not to delay, for the Day when the books are distributed is certain, and no one knows when their journey will end. Let this verse inspire you to examine your own record today—before it is handed to you in the Hereafter. Strive to be among the companions of the right hand, for their reward is eternal bliss, while the companions of the left hand face a fate that no one can bear to imagine. May Allah guide us all to the straight path and save us from the left side.
