Key Words and Phrases:

  • Sābiqū (سَابِقُوا): Race, compete, or hasten with urgency and earnestness.
  • Maghfirah (مَغْفِرَةٍ): Forgiveness — the covering of sins and the protection from their consequences.
  • Jannah (جَنَّةٍ): Paradise, the eternal garden of bliss.
  • ʿArḍuhā (عَرْضُهَا): Its breadth or width — indicating vastness beyond human comprehension.
  • Uʿiddat (أُعِدَّتْ): Prepared and made ready — signifying that it already exists, fully furnished for its inhabitants.
  • Faḍl (فَضْلُ): Grace, bounty, and favor — something given out of divine generosity, not mere entitlement.

The Interpretation:

O people, race with one another — not in the fleeting competitions of this world, but in the pursuit of what truly matters: the forgiveness of your Lord and a Paradise whose vastness spans the heavens and the earth. This is an urgent call to action, a divine invitation to outdo each other in good deeds, sincere repentance, and every act that draws you closer to Allah. The forgiveness mentioned here is not merely the erasure of sins; it is the sweeping away of every shortcoming and the protection from their consequences in this life and the next.

Imagine a garden so immense that its width alone equals the combined breadth of the heavens and the earth — and its length is even greater, for the width of anything is always less than its full extent. This is not a metaphor or a poetic exaggeration; it is the truthful description from the One who created the heavens and the earth. This Paradise has already been prepared, fully adorned and perfected, for those who truly believed in Allah and His messengers — those who accepted the message of monotheism, followed the prophets with sincerity, and lived their lives in obedience to the divine will.

Yet — and here lies a profound truth — this magnificent reward is not something you can earn solely through your deeds. It is the *faḍl* (grace) of Allah, which He bestows upon whom He wills. Your good deeds are the means, but the acceptance and the reward are entirely from His mercy. He does not owe you Paradise; rather, He grants it out of His infinite generosity. And Allah is the Possessor of immense grace — His giving knows no bounds, and His favor is beyond measure.

This verse awakens within the believer a beautiful urgency: do not delay your return to Allah, do not postpone your repentance, and do not underestimate the value of even a single good deed. The door of forgiveness is open, and Paradise is waiting. Race toward it with all your heart, for the prize is greater than anything your eyes have seen or your minds can conceive. And when you stumble, remember that His grace is vaster than your sins — so rise, seek His forgiveness, and continue the race. The finish line is not the grave; it is the eternal garden where the believers will dwell forever, enveloped in the mercy of the Most Generous.

📜 Verse 19-23 — Al-Hadid

And those who have believed in Allah and His messengers - those are [in the ranks of] the supporters of truth and the martyrs, with their Lord. For them is their reward and their light. But those who have disbelieved and denied Our verses - those are the companions of Hellfire.
Know that the life of this world is but amusement and diversion and adornment and boasting to one another and competition in increase of wealth and children - like the example of a rain whose [resulting] plant growth pleases the tillers; then it dries and you see it turned yellow; then it becomes [scattered] debris. And in the Hereafter is severe punishment and forgiveness from Allah and approval. And what is the worldly life except the enjoyment of delusion.
Race toward forgiveness from your Lord and a Garden whose width is like the width of the heavens and earth, prepared for those who believed in Allah and His messengers. That is the bounty of Allah which He gives to whom He wills, and Allah is the possessor of great bounty.
No disaster strikes upon the earth or among yourselves except that it is in a register before We bring it into being - indeed that, for Allah, is easy -
In order that you not despair over what has eluded you and not exult [in pride] over what He has given you. And Allah does not like everyone self-deluded and boastful -
