Translation — Tafsir

Word Meanings:

  • Al-Hamd (الْحَمْدُ): Perfect praise and gratitude accompanied by love and reverence, directed solely to Allah for His attributes of perfection and His countless blessings.
  • Khalaqa (خَلَقَ): Created and brought into existence from nothing, without any prior example.
  • Zulumat (الظُّلُمَاتِ): Plural of darkness; here referring to the darkness of the night, and by extension, the darkness of disbelief and ignorance.
  • Nur (النُّورِ): Light; here referring to the light of the day, and by extension, the light of faith and guidance.
  • Ya'dilun (يَعْدِلُونَ): They equate or make equal; i.e., they set up rivals and partners with Allah in worship.

Tafsir (Explanation):

All praise — complete and perfect — belongs to Allah alone. He is the One who deserves all thanks and glorification for His magnificent attributes and His abundant blessings, both visible and hidden, spiritual and worldly. He is the Creator who brought into existence the heavens and the earth — the vast skies with their celestial bodies, and the earth with all its wonders — without any previous model or example. He alone originated all of creation.

Among His supreme signs is that He created darkness and light: the night descends with its darkness, and the day follows with its brightness, in a perfect, unceasing rhythm. This alternation of night and day is a living proof of His absolute power, wisdom, and sole right to be worshipped. No one else shares even a fraction of this creative ability, and therefore no one else deserves any portion of worship.

Yet, despite this overwhelming clarity — despite the heavens and the earth testifying to their Creator, and despite the alternation of darkness and light pointing to His oneness — those who disbelieve still equate others with their Lord. They take idols, stones, and false deities as partners with Allah, setting them up as equals to the One who created everything. They worship creation instead of the Creator, and they turn away from the truth even when it shines as clearly as the light of day.

This verse opens the Surah with a profound reminder: the entire universe is a book of signs pointing to Allah's greatness, and the first step of faith is to recognize that all praise belongs to Him alone — and to Him alone belongs our worship.

A Call to Reflection and Faith:

Dear reader, pause for a moment and look around you. Look at the sky above, the earth beneath your feet, and the cycle of day and night that never fails. Every sunrise and every sunset is a living testimony to the power and wisdom of Allah. If all of this points to one Creator, why would anyone turn away and worship anything else? The truth is as clear as daylight — so let your heart embrace it, and let your tongue be filled with praise for the One who created you, sustains you, and guides you. Say with certainty: Alhamdulillah — all praise belongs to Allah, the Lord of all worlds.

📜 Verse 1-3 — Al-An'am

[All] praise is [due] to Allah, who created the heavens and the earth and made the darkness and the light. Then those who disbelieve equate [others] with their Lord.
It is He who created you from clay and then decreed a term and a specified time [known] to Him; then [still] you are in dispute.
And He is Allah, [the only deity] in the heavens and the earth. He knows your secret and what you make public, and He knows that which you earn.
