Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- "Min teen" (from clay): Refers to the original creation of Adam (peace be upon him), the father of all humanity, from clay.
- "Qada ajalan" (then decreed a term): He appointed a fixed period for your life in this world, ending with death.
- "Ajalun musamman 'indahu" (a specified term with Him): A second, known term reserved with Allah alone — the time of resurrection and the Hereafter.
- "Tamtaroon" (you doubt): You harbor uncertainty and skepticism, specifically regarding the power of Allah to bring you back to life after death.
Explanation of the Verse:
This verse addresses all of humanity with a profound reminder of their origin and ultimate destiny. Allah states that He is the One who created you from clay — meaning He created your forefather Adam from that substance, and you are his descendants, carried forth as his progeny. Since the branch is attributed to its root, Allah addresses the children of Adam collectively, reminding them of their humble beginning.
After this creation, Allah decreed a term for your stay in this worldly life — a limited, known span that ends with death. Then He set another term, known only to Him, which extends from death until the Day of Resurrection — the period of the Barzakh (the interval between death and the Hereafter). This second term is fixed and unchanging, known fully to Allah alone.
Yet, despite all these clear signs — your own creation from clay, the certainty of death, and the promise of a second life — you still doubt. You question Allah's ability to resurrect you after you have turned to dust. This doubt is not due to a lack of evidence, but rather a stubbornness of the heart and a failure to reflect on the clear proofs placed before you.
A Call to Reflection and Faith:
Dear reader, pause and ponder this magnificent truth: the same Allah who brought you into existence from a handful of clay, who fashioned you in the womb and gave you life, hearing, sight, and understanding — is He not able to bring you back after death? Indeed, the One who began creation is more than capable of repeating it. Your very existence is a living miracle that testifies to His infinite power. So why do you doubt? Why do you turn away from the One who created you, sustains you, and has prepared for you a meeting with Him?
Let this verse awaken your heart. Your life in this world is but a fleeting moment — a journey with a fixed destination. The first term (your worldly life) is a test, and the second term (the Hereafter) is the eternal reality where you will reap what you have sown. Do not let doubt rob you of the greatest success. Embrace faith in Allah's power and His promise, for He is the Most Truthful, and His word is absolute. The path to eternal bliss lies in recognizing your Creator, submitting to Him, and preparing for that appointed day that is nearer to you than you think.
