- Aṣnām (أَصْنَامًا): Idols or statues carved from stone, wood, or other materials, which people worshipped instead of Allah.
- Ḍalāl mubīn (ضَلَالٍ مُّبِينٍ): Clear, evident misguidance and deviation from the path of truth.
Tafsir (Explanation):
In this verse, Allah commands His Prophet Muhammad ﷺ — and through him, all believers — to recall and reflect upon the noble stance of Prophet Ibrahim (peace be upon him) when he addressed his own father, Āzar. Despite the deep love and respect a son naturally holds for his father, Ibrahim did not remain silent in the face of falsehood. He courageously asked his father: "Do you take idols — mere lifeless statues carved by human hands — as gods to be worshipped instead of Allah, the Creator of the heavens and the earth?"
This question was not merely an inquiry; it was a powerful rebuke and an invitation to reason. Ibrahim then declared with clarity and certainty: "Indeed, I see you and your people in manifest error." He did not limit his criticism to his father alone but included the entire community that shared in this false worship. He identified their deviation as "clear" — meaning it was so evident that no rational person could deny it, for how could created objects made by human beings be equated with the Almighty Creator who has no partner or equal?
The wisdom in Ibrahim's approach is profound. He began with his closest relative, showing that calling to truth begins at home, with those we love most. He used gentle yet firm questioning to provoke thought, rather than immediate condemnation. He combined his criticism with a clear statement of the truth, leaving no room for ambiguity.
This verse teaches us several timeless lessons:
- Courage in truth: Even when confronting one's own father, truth must be spoken with respect but without compromise.
- Tawḥīd (Monotheism) is the core message: All prophets, from the first to the last, came with the same message — worship Allah alone and reject all false deities.
- Clear misguidance must be identified: Ibrahim did not sugarcoat the reality; he called it what it was — manifest error.
- Da'wah begins with family: The closest people to us deserve our sincere advice and guidance before anyone else.
As believers, we should draw inspiration from Ibrahim's example. He did not abandon his father despite his father's stubbornness; rather, he continued to call him with wisdom and compassion. This is the beautiful balance of Islam — firmness in truth, yet gentleness in approach. Let us remember that even when people reject our message, our duty is to convey it clearly and with love, leaving the outcome to Allah. For indeed, guidance comes only from Him, and our reward lies in our sincere effort and steadfastness upon the truth.
