Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- Fitnah (فِتْنَةً): Here it means a trial, tribulation, or a cause of misguidance and corruption — specifically, being made an object through which others are led astray or through which the believers themselves are tested in their faith.
- Al-ʿAzīz (الْعَزِيزُ): The Almighty, the All-Powerful, the One who cannot be overcome or defeated.
- Al-Ḥakīm (الْحَكِيمُ): The All-Wise, the One who places everything in its perfect and proper place in His creation, His commands, and His decree.
Explanation of the Verse:
This verse is part of a beautiful supplication taught by Allah to His believing servants — a prayer that combines protection from trials, seeking forgiveness, and acknowledging Allah’s perfect attributes. The believers, following the example of Prophet Ibrahim (peace be upon him) and his followers, turn to their Lord and say:
*"Our Lord, do not make us a trial for those who have disbelieved."*
This means: O Allah, do not let the disbelievers gain power or dominance over us in a way that would cause them to oppress us, persecute us, or lead us away from our religion. And do not let them be victorious over us in a manner that would make them say, "If these people were upon the truth, they would not have been overcome or afflicted." Such a statement would only increase them in their disbelief and arrogance. Likewise, do not let our own weaknesses or sins become a means through which they are emboldened against us, or through which we ourselves are shaken in our faith.
The believers also ask: *"And forgive us, our Lord."* — meaning, cover our sins with Your pardon and mercy, and do not leave us to be punished for our shortcomings, for if You were to punish us, our enemies would rejoice and our faith would be tested even further.
Then they conclude: *"Indeed, You are the Almighty, the All-Wise."* — You are the One whose power cannot be challenged, so protect us with Your might; and You are the One whose wisdom is perfect, so You know exactly what is best for us, when to grant victory, and when to test.
A Daʿwah Reflection:
This verse is a treasure of guidance for every believer. It teaches us that our relationship with Allah is not only about asking for our needs — it is about asking for protection from being a cause of harm to others, especially in matters of faith. When we see the state of the Muslim Ummah today, with trials and tribulations afflicting believers in many parts of the world, this supplication becomes even more relevant. It reminds us that our ultimate refuge is in Allah alone, and that we should constantly seek His protection from being a source of fitnah — whether by our own sins, our negligence, or our failure to uphold His religion.
At the same time, the verse instills hope: no matter how difficult the circumstances, Allah is al-ʿAzīz — the Almighty who is never defeated — and al-Ḥakīm — the All-Wise who knows exactly when and how to bring relief. So hold fast to this supplication, make it part of your daily worship, and trust that Allah hears and answers. He never abandons those who turn to Him with sincere hearts. And let this beautiful duʿā be a bridge that connects you to the legacy of the prophets and the righteous — for it was the very prayer of Ibrahim and his followers, and by reciting it, you join their ranks in seeking the pleasure of Allah.
