Word Meanings:
- Al-Haaqqah (الحاقة): The inevitable reality — the Day of Resurrection that will undoubtedly occur, whose events are certain and true.
- Ma adraaka (ما أدراك): What will make you know? — an expression used in the Qur'an to emphasize the immense magnitude and awe of what is being described, indicating that its true nature is beyond human comprehension.
Explanation of the Verse:
After Allah Almighty mentioned the Day of Resurrection in the previous verse, He now magnifies its affair and elevates its status with this rhetorical question: "And what will make you know what the Inevitable Reality is?"
This is a style of emphasis and glorification. It means: O Messenger, you have not fully grasped the true nature of this Day, nor can any human mind comprehend its horrors and terrors. For you have not witnessed what it contains — the overwhelming events, the great upheavals, the severe reckoning, and the ultimate justice that will be established. The repetition of its mention, followed by this question of wonder, serves to strike awe and fear into the hearts of the listeners, making them realize that this Day is far greater than anything they can imagine or describe.
The verse teaches us that the reality of the Hereafter is beyond human perception in this worldly life. We believe in it firmly, but its true nature and severity are known only to Allah. This is why the Qur'an repeatedly uses such expressions — to awaken the conscience and prepare the soul for the meeting with its Lord.
A Da'wah Reflection:
Dear brother and sister in humanity, this verse invites you to pause and reflect: If the Qur'an — the word of the All-Knowing Creator — describes the Day of Judgment as something so great that even the Prophet ﷺ is told "what will make you know," then how can we afford to be heedless of it? How can we live as if this Day will never come?
The beauty of Islam is that it does not ask you to fear blindly, but rather to prepare. The same Qur'an that warns you of the terror of that Day also tells you of the mercy of Allah, the ease of His forgiveness, and the joy of Paradise. So let this verse be a wake-up call — a gentle but firm reminder that life is short, the Hereafter is real, and the best investment you can make is in your relationship with your Creator. Turn to Him today, before that Day when every soul will see what it has sent forth. Indeed, the One who warned you of the Haaqqah is the One who loves you and wants you to succeed — so respond to His call with a sincere heart.
