Key Words and Their Meanings:

  • Meeqat (مِيقَات): The appointed time or term set by Allah for a specific purpose.
  • Akhlifni (اخْلُفْنِي): "Be my successor" or "Take my place" — meaning to act as a deputy and caretaker.
  • Sabeel al-Mufsideen (سَبِيلَ الْمُفْسِدِينَ): The path of those who cause corruption and spread mischief on earth.

Explanation of the Verse:

In this noble verse, Allah Almighty tells us about His divine appointment with His Prophet Musa (Moses, peace be upon him). Allah had promised Musa a meeting for private conversation and divine revelation, and this appointment was set for thirty nights — specifically the nights of the month of Dhul-Qi'dah. Then Allah completed this period with ten additional nights from the month of Dhul-Hijjah, making the total forty nights. This was the precise and complete time that Allah had decreed for speaking directly to His Prophet Musa.

When the time came for Musa to depart to Mount Tur for this sacred meeting with his Lord, he did not neglect his responsibility toward his people. Instead, he turned to his brother Harun (Aaron, peace be upon him) — who was also a prophet — and said to him: "Be my successor among my people until I return. Guide them toward righteousness, command them to worship Allah alone, and keep them on the straight path. And do not follow the way of those who spread corruption in the land — do not obey the disobedient, and do not support the wrongdoers in any way."

This verse beautifully illustrates several profound lessons for every believer:

First: The importance of preparation for meeting Allah. Just as Musa was appointed a specific time to meet his Lord, every believer should understand that they too have an appointment with Allah — the Day of Judgment. Are we preparing for that meeting as Musa prepared for his?

Second: The balance between worship and responsibility. Notice how Musa did not abandon his people while going to worship his Lord. He ensured they had a leader, a guide, and a reformer. This teaches us that true worship does not mean neglecting our duties toward others. A Muslim is someone who combines devotion to Allah with service to humanity.

Third: The virtue of sincere advice and brotherhood. Musa's words to Harun reflect the deep bond of love and trust between brothers in faith. He entrusted him with the most precious thing — the care of the entire nation. This shows us how Muslims should support one another in righteousness and piety.

Fourth: The warning against corruption. Musa's final instruction — "do not follow the way of the corrupters" — is a timeless reminder for all of us. Corruption in all its forms — moral, social, economic, and spiritual — is a disease that destroys nations. The believer must always stand on the side of reform and justice, never on the side of those who spread mischief.

Fifth: Allah's wisdom in His decrees. The specific number of forty nights was not random — it was a period of preparation, purification, and spiritual elevation for Musa before he would receive the Torah. Similarly, Allah sometimes tests us with periods of waiting and patience, but these are always for our ultimate good and growth.

O beloved reader! Reflect on this beautiful scene: the Prophet of Allah, on his way to the most sublime spiritual experience — direct conversation with his Creator — still takes the time to care for his flock. He appoints a successor, gives clear instructions, and emphasizes both reform and the avoidance of corruption. This is the character of the prophets: complete devotion to Allah combined with complete care for humanity.

Let us strive to embody these qualities in our own lives. Let us prepare for our meeting with Allah, fulfill our responsibilities toward others, give sincere advice to our brothers and sisters, stand firmly against corruption, and trust in Allah's perfect wisdom in all His decrees. May Allah grant us the ability to follow the noble example of His prophets. Ameen.

📜 Verse 140-144 — Al-A'raf

He said, "Is it other than Allah I should desire for you as a god while He has preferred you over the worlds?"
And [recall, O Children of Israel], when We saved you from the people of Pharaoh, [who were] afflicting you with the worst torment - killing your sons and keeping your women alive. And in that was a great trial from your Lord.
And We made an appointment with Moses for thirty nights and perfected them by [the addition of] ten; so the term of his Lord was completed as forty nights. And Moses said to his brother Aaron, "Take my place among my people, do right [by them], and do not follow the way of the corrupters."
And when Moses arrived at Our appointed time and his Lord spoke to him, he said, "My Lord, show me [Yourself] that I may look at You." [Allah] said, "You will not see Me, but look at the mountain; if it should remain in place, then you will see Me." But when his Lord appeared to the mountain, He rendered it level, and Moses fell unconscious. And when he awoke, he said, "Exalted are You! I have repented to You, and I am the first of the believers."
[Allah] said, "O Moses, I have chosen you over the people with My messages and My words [to you]. So take what I have given you and be among the grateful."
