Translation — Tafsir

Word Meanings:

  • Anjaynākum — We saved you and delivered you from hardship.
  • Yasūmūnakum sū’a al-‘adhāb — They were making you taste the most severe and humiliating punishment.
  • Yuqattilūna abnā’akum — They were slaughtering your sons (the emphasis indicates repeated and widespread killing).
  • Yastaḥyūna nisā’akum — They were sparing your women alive, keeping them for servitude and humiliation.
  • Balā’un — A trial, test, or great favor that distinguishes gratitude from ingratitude.

Tafsir (Explanation):

O Children of Israel, remember and reflect upon the immense favor Allah bestowed upon you when He rescued you from the tyranny of Pharaoh and his people. They were subjecting you to the worst forms of torment — slaughtering your sons mercilessly while sparing your women to serve them in humiliation and degradation. This was not merely a physical punishment but a systematic campaign to break your spirit, erase your dignity, and annihilate your future.

Yet, in the midst of this darkness, Allah’s mercy shone through. He delivered you from their grip, and this very deliverance was a profound trial from your Lord — a test of whether you would respond with gratitude, obedience, and steadfast faith, or fall into ingratitude and rebellion. The greatness of this blessing is matched only by the greatness of the responsibility it places upon you. When Allah saves a people from oppression, He expects from them thankfulness not just in words, but in action — by worshipping Him alone, following His messengers, and upholding His commands.

This verse carries a timeless lesson for all believers: the trials we face — whether hardship or ease — are from Allah, and they are designed to purify us and reveal the truth of our faith. When you find yourself delivered from a difficulty, let it increase your love for Allah, your reliance upon Him, and your commitment to His path. For indeed, the One who saved the Children of Israel from Pharaoh is the same Lord who saves His sincere servants from every darkness — and His promise of victory for the patient and grateful is true and certain.

So, dear believer, look at your own life: how many times has Allah rescued you from situations that seemed impossible? How many times has He turned your trials into blessings? Let this remembrance fill your heart with gratitude, and let that gratitude draw you closer to Him. For Allah loves those who remember His favors and respond with steadfastness and thanks. And know that with every hardship, there is ease — and with every test, there is a reward beyond measure for those who remain patient and faithful.

Indeed, those [worshippers] - destroyed is that in which they are [engaged], and worthless is whatever they were doing."
He said, "Is it other than Allah I should desire for you as a god while He has preferred you over the worlds?"
And [recall, O Children of Israel], when We saved you from the people of Pharaoh, [who were] afflicting you with the worst torment - killing your sons and keeping your women alive. And in that was a great trial from your Lord.
And We made an appointment with Moses for thirty nights and perfected them by [the addition of] ten; so the term of his Lord was completed as forty nights. And Moses said to his brother Aaron, "Take my place among my people, do right [by them], and do not follow the way of the corrupters."
And when Moses arrived at Our appointed time and his Lord spoke to him, he said, "My Lord, show me [Yourself] that I may look at You." [Allah] said, "You will not see Me, but look at the mountain; if it should remain in place, then you will see Me." But when his Lord appeared to the mountain, He rendered it level, and Moses fell unconscious. And when he awoke, he said, "Exalted are You! I have repented to You, and I am the first of the believers."
