Explanation of the Verse:
After Satan swore to Adam and Eve that he was their sincere advisor, he succeeded in deceiving them. He enticed them to taste from the tree that Allah had explicitly forbidden them to approach. The moment they tasted it, the garments of Paradise that had covered them fell away, and their private parts became exposed. This was a profound change — they had been clothed with a covering of light and dignity, and now they found themselves naked and vulnerable. In their sudden shame, they began to gather leaves from the trees of Paradise, hastily stitching them together to cover themselves.
At that critical moment, their Lord called out to them in gentle but firm rebuke: "Did I not forbid you from that tree? Did I not warn you that Satan is your clear, open enemy?" It was a reminder that they had been forewarned, yet the whisper of the deceiver had overcome their resolve.
This verse carries a powerful lesson: the exposure of one's private parts is among the gravest of matters — it has always been considered shameful and repugnant in sound human nature and sound intellect. The instinct to cover oneself is deeply embedded in human dignity, and its violation is a sign of falling from grace. Moreover, the verse teaches us that sin strips away our spiritual covering, and that the path back to Allah begins with recognizing our error, feeling shame, and turning back to Him in repentance. Allah's call to Adam and Eve was not a call of destruction, but a call of guidance — a door left open for them to return, which they did, and He accepted their repentance. This is the mercy of Allah: even in rebuke, He opens the way back to Him.
