Word Meanings:

We have wronged ourselves; we have harmed our own souls through disobedience.
You forgive us; cover our sins and pardon our faults.
You have mercy upon us; bestow Your compassion and kindness upon us.
The losers; those who have lost everything of value, in this life and the Hereafter.

Explanation of the Verse:

This verse captures the moment when Adam and Eve, after falling into the error of eating from the forbidden tree, turned back to their Lord in sincere repentance. They acknowledged their fault openly and humbly, saying: "Our Lord, we have wronged ourselves." This was not an excuse or a blame-shifting attempt—it was a pure confession of their own responsibility. They did not blame Satan, nor did they question the divine command. Instead, they owned their mistake with complete honesty.

Then they added: "And if You do not forgive us and have mercy upon us, we will surely be among the losers." This is a profound recognition of their absolute need for Allah's grace. They understood that without His forgiveness and mercy, they would be ruined—losing their place in Paradise, their closeness to Allah, and their ultimate success in both worlds. The word "losers" here refers to those who have squandered their true share of happiness and salvation.

These words were not merely a casual prayer—they were the very words that Allah taught Adam to say, as mentioned in another verse of the Quran (2:37). This shows us the beautiful reality that when a believer stumbles, Allah does not leave them without a way back. He Himself teaches them how to repent, opening the door of forgiveness wide for those who sincerely seek it.

A Call to Reflection and Action:

Dear reader, see how the first human beings—the father and mother of all mankind—set the example of repentance for us. They were prophets, chosen and honored by Allah, yet when they erred, they did not become arrogant or defensive. They lowered themselves before their Creator, admitted their fault, and pleaded for His mercy. And Allah, in His infinite kindness, accepted their repentance and forgave them.

This teaches us a timeless lesson: no matter how great our sins may be, the door of repentance is never closed. Allah loves those who turn back to Him. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said: "Every son of Adam sins, and the best of those who sin are those who repent." (Tirmidhi)

So, if you have made mistakes in your life—whether small or great—do not despair. Do not let Shaytan convince you that you are too far gone or that Allah will not accept you. Look at Adam and Eve: they were forgiven, and so can you be. All you need is a sincere heart, a truthful tongue, and a firm resolve to change. Call upon your Lord with the same words: "Our Lord, we have wronged ourselves, and if You do not forgive us and have mercy upon us, we will surely be among the losers." And know that Allah, who is Ar-Rahman (The Most Merciful) and Ar-Rahim (The Most Compassionate), is waiting to embrace you with His forgiveness.

Let this verse be a source of hope and motivation for you. It is not a story of failure—it is a story of redemption, mercy, and the boundless love of Allah for His servants who turn to Him. Be among those who repent, and you will never be among the losers.

📜 Verse 21-25 — Al-A'raf

And he swore [by Allah] to them, "Indeed, I am to you from among the sincere advisors."
So he made them fall, through deception. And when they tasted of the tree, their private parts became apparent to them, and they began to fasten together over themselves from the leaves of Paradise. And their Lord called to them, "Did I not forbid you from that tree and tell you that Satan is to you a clear enemy?"
They said, "Our Lord, we have wronged ourselves, and if You do not forgive us and have mercy upon us, we will surely be among the losers."
[Allah] said, "Descend, being to one another enemies. And for you on the earth is a place of settlement and enjoyment for a time."
He said, "Therein you will live, and therein you will die, and from it you will be brought forth."
