Key Words and Phrases:
- Qasamahuma (وَقَاسَمَهُمَا): He swore to them both, making a solemn oath by Allah.
- An-Nasihin (النَّاصِحِينَ): Those who are sincere advisers, well-wishers, and truthful in their counsel.
Explanation of the Verse:
After the whisper of Satan reached its peak, he resorted to the most deceptive of tactics: he swore a solemn oath by Allah to Adam and Eve, saying, "Indeed, I am to you both among the sincere advisers." He presented himself as a well-wisher, one who genuinely cared for their welfare, while in truth he was their most bitter enemy.
This was the ultimate inversion of reality. Satan, who had already been condemned by Allah for his arrogance and disobedience, now dared to invoke the Name of Allah to support his lie. He knew that Adam and Eve, in their pure and innate nature, would be inclined to trust someone who swore by their Lord. And so, he used the most sacred thing—the Name of Allah—to sell the most corrupt thing: his deception.
In this, there is a profound lesson for humanity. The greatest danger does not always come from an obvious enemy, but from one who disguises himself as a friend. Satan's strategy was not to force Adam and Eve into sin, but to make them *choose* it willingly, believing they were doing something good. He made the forbidden tree appear as the key to their happiness, their immortality, and their elevation—when in reality, it was the door to their loss.
Notice how Satan did not say, "Disobey your Lord." Instead, he said, "I am your sincere adviser." He framed his deception in the language of love and care. This is how he continues to work in the hearts of people today—by beautifying sin, by making it seem reasonable, beneficial, or even necessary. He whispers, "This small compromise won't hurt," or "You deserve this pleasure," or "Everyone is doing it." And he swears by Allah that he means well.
But the believer must be wiser than Adam's moment of forgetfulness. We must know that the true adviser is Allah and His Messenger (peace be upon him). Whoever calls you to the obedience of Allah, even if it is difficult, is your real well-wisher. And whoever calls you to the disobedience of Allah, even if he swears by Allah that he loves you, is your true enemy.
This verse also teaches us that a lie repeated with confidence and wrapped in religious language does not become the truth. Satan was the first to swear falsely by Allah, and his followers continue this legacy. So, let the believer be cautious: not every oath is a guarantee of sincerity, and not every sweet word is a sign of good intentions. Measure every advice against the Qur'an and the Sunnah. If it aligns with them, accept it. If it contradicts them, reject it—no matter how beautifully it is presented.
And in this story, there is also a glimpse of Allah's immense mercy. Despite the deception and the fall, Allah did not abandon Adam and Eve. He taught them words of repentance, and He forgave them. This is the beauty of Islam: even after a mistake, the door of return is always open. Satan's victory is never final, for the believer who turns back to Allah with a sincere heart will find His Lord waiting with forgiveness and love.
So, let this verse be a reminder to you, dear reader: beware of those who swear by Allah to lead you astray, and hold fast to the guidance of Allah, for it is the only path to true success. And if you ever slip, do not despair—return to your Lord, for He is the Most Merciful, the Most Forgiving.
