Tafsir (Explanation):
After Adam and Hawwa (Eve) disobeyed the command of Allah by eating from the forbidden tree, and after they sought His forgiveness and were pardoned, Allah addressed them along with Iblis (Satan), saying: "Descend from the Garden to the earth." This descent was not merely a physical relocation—it was the beginning of a new phase in human existence, a test filled with trials and responsibilities.
Allah declared that some of them would be enemies to others—meaning that Adam and his offspring would be enemies of Iblis and his followers, and vice versa. This enmity is not a passive feeling but an active, ongoing struggle. Satan vowed to mislead humanity, and humans are commanded to resist his whispers and temptations. This is the eternal conflict between truth and falsehood, guidance and misguidance.
Then Allah gave them the comforting news: "And for you on earth is a place of settlement and enjoyment for a time." Despite the descent being a consequence of disobedience, Allah, in His infinite mercy, did not leave them without provision. The earth was made a dwelling place where they could live, build, multiply, and enjoy the lawful blessings of life—but only until an appointed term. This "appointed time" is the end of each person's life, and ultimately the end of this world.
This verse teaches us several profound lessons:
- The reality of the enemy: Satan is our declared enemy. We must never be negligent of his plots, nor should we follow his footsteps. Recognizing him as an enemy is the first step in guarding against his deception.
- The mercy of Allah: Even after disobedience, Allah provided a place of settlement and enjoyment. He did not destroy them or abandon them. This shows that Allah's mercy prevails over His wrath, and that the door of repentance is always open.
- Life is temporary: The earth is not our final destination. It is a transient abode, a testing ground. The phrase "until a time" reminds us that this life will end, and we will return to our Lord for the final reckoning. So let us not become attached to this world as if it were eternal, but rather use it as a means to reach the eternal bliss of Paradise.
- Hope and optimism: Although the descent was a punishment, it was also a new opportunity. Allah gave humans the chance to prove themselves, to worship Him, and to earn His pleasure. Every believer who strives in the path of Allah, despite the whispers of Satan, is on the path of ultimate success.
So, dear reader, know that your life on this earth is a journey with a purpose. You have an enemy who seeks to misguide you, but you also have a Lord who guides you, provides for you, and has given you the Qur'an and the Sunnah as your compass. Hold fast to His rope, seek His protection from the accursed Satan, and remember that this world is but a temporary station—the real, everlasting life is in the Hereafter. May Allah make us among those who recognize their enemy, cherish their Lord, and succeed in this test.
