Translation — Tafsir

Word Meanings:

  • Zeenah (زِينَةَ): Adornment, beauty, or anything that enhances appearance — specifically here, clothing and lawful embellishments.
  • Tayyibat (الطَّيِّبَاتِ): Pure, wholesome, and lawful provisions — including food, drink, and all that is good and permissible.
  • Rizq (الرِّزْقِ): Sustenance and provision granted by Allah.
  • Khalisah (خَالِصَةً): Exclusive, pure, and unshared — reserved solely for someone.

Tafsir (Explanation):

O Prophet, respond to those who, out of ignorance and false piety, claim that Allah has forbidden what He Himself has provided. Ask them: "Who has forbidden the beautiful adornments of Allah — the fine clothing, the elegant garments, and all that beautifies a person's appearance — which He brought forth from the earth and made available for His servants? And who has forbidden the pure, wholesome provisions — the delicious foods, refreshing drinks, and all that is lawful and good — from the sustenance He has granted you?"

The answer is clear: no one has the right to forbid what Allah has made lawful. Such prohibitions are mere inventions of human beings who overstep their bounds.

Then say to them: These blessings — the adornments and the pure provisions — are for the believers in this worldly life, though others may share in them temporarily. But on the Day of Resurrection, they will be exclusively for the believers alone. No disbeliever will have any share in them, for Paradise is forbidden to those who rejected faith. The believer's enjoyment in this world is but a foretaste; their true, complete, and eternal enjoyment will be in the Hereafter, where no one will compete with them for these blessings.

In this manner, Allah makes His signs and rulings clear and detailed for people who understand and reflect — for those whose hearts are open to knowledge and who benefit from the guidance He reveals.

A Da'wah Reflection:

This verse is a beautiful reminder that Islam is not a religion of deprivation or harshness. Allah, in His infinite mercy and wisdom, has created the world with beauty and goodness, and He wants His servants to enjoy what He has provided — within the boundaries He has set. The true spirit of faith is gratitude and balance: to enjoy the lawful pleasures of this life while keeping one's heart attached to the eternal rewards of the Hereafter. So embrace the blessings of Allah with a thankful heart, and let your enjoyment of them be a means of drawing closer to Him, not a distraction from Him. For the believer, even the simple act of eating, drinking, and dressing well can become an act of worship when accompanied by gratitude and obedience.

📜 Verse 30-34 — Al-A'raf

A group [of you] He guided, and a group deserved [to be in] error. Indeed, they had taken the devils as allies instead of Allah while they thought that they were guided.
O children of Adam, take your adornment at every masjid, and eat and drink, but be not excessive. Indeed, He likes not those who commit excess.

Say, "My Lord has only forbidden immoralities - what is apparent of them and what is concealed - and sin, and oppression without right, and that you associate with Allah that for which He has not sent down authority, and that you say about Allah that which you do not know."
And for every nation is a [specified] term. So when their time has come, they will not remain behind an hour, nor will they precede [it].
