Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- Zeenatakum (زِينَتَكُمْ): Your adornment and beautiful attire — specifically, clothing that covers the private parts and presents a dignified appearance.
- ‘Inda kulli masjid (عِندَ كُلِّ مَسْجِدٍ): At every place of prayer and worship — meaning every time you perform prayer or circumambulate the Ka‘bah.
- Lā tusrifū (لَا تُسْرِفُوا): Do not exceed the limits of moderation — whether in food, drink, clothing, or any other matter.
Explanation of the Verse:
O children of Adam! Allah, in His infinite mercy and care for His servants, addresses all of humanity with a beautiful and practical command. He instructs you to take your adornment — your proper, clean, and modest clothing — at every place of worship. This means that whenever you stand before your Lord in prayer, or perform the circumambulation of the Sacred House, you must be dressed in a manner that covers your private parts and reflects dignity, cleanliness, and beauty. This command came as a direct correction to a practice among some Arabs who used to circle the Ka‘bah naked, claiming that they should not worship in clothes they had worn while disobeying Allah. Allah rejected this false notion and reminded them — and all of us — that modesty and proper dress are essential to worship.
Furthermore, Allah says: “And eat and drink, but do not be excessive.” This is a profound lesson in balance. Allah has provided for you pure and lawful provisions — so enjoy them with gratitude, but never cross the line into extravagance, wastefulness, or indulging in the unlawful. Overeating, wasting food, or consuming what Allah has forbidden are all forms of transgression. Islam is the religion of moderation — it neither forbids the good things of life nor allows unchecked indulgence. It teaches you to live with balance, honoring your body as a trust from Allah.
Then Allah concludes with a warning filled with both love and firmness: “Indeed, He does not love those who commit excess.” This is not merely a prohibition — it is a declaration that extravagance and transgression distance a person from the love of Allah. And what could be more tragic than losing the love of your Creator? The one who is moderate in all affairs earns Allah’s pleasure and guidance, while the one who exceeds the limits finds himself deprived of that divine affection.
A Call to Reflection and Action:
Dear reader, this verse is a gift from your Lord — a practical guide for your daily life. When you stand for prayer, remember that you are meeting your King, so dress beautifully, purify yourself, and present yourself in the best manner. When you eat and drink, remember that these are blessings from Allah — so be grateful, be moderate, and avoid waste. And when you walk through life, let this principle of balance guide your spending, your habits, and your worship. Allah does not burden you with hardship — He simply asks you to live with dignity, gratitude, and moderation. Embrace this beautiful teaching, and you will find peace in this world and the next.
