Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- Rijs (رِجْس): Punishment, filth, or abomination—here referring to a severe torment that descends upon the disbelievers.
- Ghadaab (غَضَب): Divine wrath and anger from Allah upon those who persist in falsehood.
- Sultaan (سُلْطَان): Proof, evidence, or authority—a compelling argument or divine sanction.
Explanation of the Verse:
Prophet Hud (peace be upon him) responded to his people’s stubborn argumentation with a firm and decisive reply: "Indeed, punishment and wrath from your Lord have already become inevitable upon you." This was not a mere threat but a declaration of certainty—their persistent rejection of the truth and their insistence on worshipping idols had sealed their fate.
Hud then challenged their illogical stance: "Do you argue with me about mere names that you and your forefathers have invented—calling these lifeless stones and statues 'gods'?" These were nothing but labels with no reality behind them. Allah had sent down no authority or proof to validate their worship of these false deities. Unlike the clear signs and miracles that supported the messengers, the idols had no power to harm, benefit, create, or provide. They were simply objects of their own imagination, inherited blindly from previous generations.
Hud concluded with a powerful declaration of patience and certainty: "So wait—indeed, I am among those who wait with you." This was the ultimate challenge, showing his unshakable trust in Allah’s promise. He was not afraid of their threats or their numbers; rather, he calmly awaited the fulfillment of Allah’s decree, knowing that the victory belongs to the truth and that falsehood is always doomed to perish.
A Call to Reflection:
This verse carries a timeless lesson for all of humanity. How often do we cling to traditions, habits, or beliefs simply because "our forefathers did it"? How often do we defend ideas without any solid proof or divine guidance? The Qur’an calls us to use our intellect, to question our assumptions, and to submit only to what is supported by clear evidence and revelation.
The story of Hud reminds us that truth is not determined by majority opinion or ancestral custom, but by alignment with the will of Allah. When we sincerely seek the truth, Allah guides our hearts. And when we stand firm upon the truth, even in the face of mockery or opposition, we can be certain that Allah’s help is near. Let this verse inspire us to be among those who reflect, who seek proof, and who trust in Allah’s promise—for the outcome of patience and faith is always beautiful.
