Key Words and Their Meanings:
- ʿAqarū (عَقَرُوا): They hamstrung or slaughtered the she-camel by cutting its legs, a severe act of cruelty and defiance.
- ʿAtaw (عَتَوْا): They were arrogant, insolent, and transgressed beyond all bounds.
- Ātinā bimā taʿidunā (ائْتِنَا بِمَا تَعِدُنَا): Bring upon us what you threaten us with — i.e., the punishment you have warned us about.
Explanation of the Verse:
After the people of Thamūd rejected the miracle of the she-camel that Allah had sent as a sign to them, they did not stop at mere disbelief. They went further and hamstrung the blessed she-camel, cutting its legs and slaughtering it in an act of sheer arrogance and rebellion. They did this despite the clear warning of Prophet Ṣāliḥ (peace be upon him) that they should not harm the camel, and that they would be seized by a terrible punishment if they did.
Their hearts were hardened, and they turned away from the command of their Lord with pride and insolence. Instead of heeding the warning and repenting, they mocked the Prophet and challenged him, saying: "O Ṣāliḥ, bring upon us what you threaten us with — the punishment you have been promising — if you are truly one of the messengers." They said this in a tone of ridicule and disbelief, thinking that the punishment would never come.
This verse paints a vivid picture of the arrogance of the human heart when it rejects the truth. They had been shown a clear miracle — a she-camel that came forth from a rock as a sign of Allah's power — yet they responded with cruelty and mockery. Their demand for the punishment was not out of sincere questioning, but out of stubbornness and a desire to challenge the divine will.
A Call to Reflection and Faith:
How often do we see people today who, when confronted with the truth, respond with arrogance and mockery instead of humility and reflection? The story of Thamūd is a timeless reminder that no one can escape the justice of Allah. The punishment they so arrogantly demanded did come upon them — a mighty blast that destroyed them all, leaving their homes in ruins as a lesson for those who reflect.
Dear reader, let this verse be a mirror for your own heart. When you hear the call of truth — the Qur'an and the Sunnah — do you respond with submission and gratitude, or do you turn away with pride? The she-camel was a sign of Allah's mercy and power, but they destroyed it. Today, the signs of Allah are all around you: the sky, the earth, the stars, your own existence. Do not be like those who see the signs and still reject them. Open your heart to the message of Islam, for it is the path to peace in this life and salvation in the Hereafter. The punishment of Allah is real, but His mercy is even greater for those who turn back to Him before it is too late.
