Word Meanings:
- الرَّجْفَة (Ar-Rajfah): A severe earthquake or violent tremor that shakes the earth and causes terror.
- جَاثِمِينَ (Jāthimīn): Lying dead, fallen prostrate on the ground, with faces and knees touching the earth—motionless, lifeless bodies.
Explanation of the Verse:
After the people of Thamūd rejected the message of Prophet Ṣāliḥ (peace be upon him) and defiantly challenged him to bring the punishment they mocked, Allah’s decree overtook them. A tremendous earthquake—a violent, earth-shattering tremor—seized them suddenly. It was so powerful that it tore their hearts apart, and they perished instantly. By morning, they lay in their own homes as lifeless corpses, fallen prostrate upon the ground, their faces and knees pressed into the dust. Not a single one of them escaped; they were all destroyed in a single moment, as a stark reminder of the consequences of arrogance and disbelief.
This verse carries a profound lesson for every soul: when a people persist in rejecting the truth and mock the warnings of their Lord, His punishment can arrive at any moment, without warning. The very earth that they once walked upon with pride became the instrument of their destruction. Yet, in His infinite mercy, Allah always sends messengers and clear signs before punishment, giving people the chance to repent and return to Him. The fate of Thamūd is not merely a story of the past—it is a living reminder that no power, wealth, or status can shield anyone from the justice of Allah when His command comes.
Dear reader, let this scene awaken your heart. The same earth that carries you today could bear witness against you tomorrow if you turn away from your Creator. But the door of repentance remains open—now, before the tremor comes. Allah does not delight in destroying; He delights in forgiving. He says: “Say, ‘O My servants who have transgressed against themselves, do not despair of the mercy of Allah. Indeed, Allah forgives all sins’” (Az-Zumar 39:53). So hasten to Him with a sincere heart, and you will find Him near, ready to welcome you with mercy that surpasses all understanding. Do not wait for the sign that comes too late—embrace His guidance today, and you will be among those who are saved, not among those who are left jāthimīn.
