Translation — Tafsir

Word Meanings:

  • Ṣirāṭ (صراط): A path or road; here, it refers to the roads and pathways people travel.
  • Tūʿidūn (توعدون): You threaten or intimidate others.
  • Taṣuddūn (تصدون): You turn away or block others.
  • Tabghūnahā ʿiwajan (تبغونها عوجًا): You seek to make it crooked or distorted.
  • ʿĀqibat (عاقبة): The final outcome or end result.

Tafsir (Explanation):

This noble verse carries a profound message from Prophet Shuʿayb (peace be upon him) to his people, warning them against their wicked practices. Allah forbids them from sitting on every road and pathway, threatening travelers and innocent people, demanding their wealth, and intimidating those who sought to follow the truth. This was a common practice among the people of Madyan—they would lie in wait on the roads to rob passersby and to terrify those who intended to visit Prophet Shuʿayb or embrace his message.

Beyond the physical obstruction, they also blocked the spiritual path—the straight path of Allah. They turned away those who believed in Allah and sought to follow His guidance, and they actively tried to make the path of Allah appear crooked and flawed. They spread doubts, cast suspicions, and used every means to discourage people from the religion of monotheism and righteousness. This is a grave sin, for not only did they stray themselves, but they also prevented others from guidance and sought to distort the clear truth.

Then Allah reminds them of His immense favor upon them: "Remember when you were few, and He multiplied you." This is a beautiful call to gratitude—reflecting on how Allah had blessed them with numerical strength, power, and provision after they had been weak and small in number. This reminder serves to soften their hearts and awaken their sense of thankfulness, for the One who multiplied them is the same One whose path they are now blocking.

Finally, Allah directs their attention to the lessons of history: "And see how was the end of the corrupters." Look at what happened to those who spread corruption in the land before you—the people of Nūḥ, ʿĀd, Thamūd, and the people of Lūṭ. Their end was destruction and ruin. This is an invitation to reflect and take heed, for the same fate awaits those who persist in corruption and oppression.

A Daʿwah Reflection:

This verse is a timeless reminder for every believer about the sanctity of the path of Allah. It teaches us that obstructing others from guidance—whether through intimidation, deception, or spreading doubts—is a severe transgression. As Muslims, we are called to be facilitators of goodness, not barriers to it. Let us reflect on the countless blessings Allah has bestowed upon us: He took us from nothingness and gave us existence, from weakness and gave us strength, from ignorance and guided us to knowledge. How can we then use these very blessings to turn people away from His path?

The verse also inspires us to be grateful and humble. When we remember how Allah multiplied us and favored us, our hearts should overflow with love for Him and for His creation. Let us be those who sit on the roads of life not to threaten or block, but to invite, encourage, and support others on the straight path. And let us always ponder the fate of those who spread corruption—for Allah’s promise is true, and His justice is certain. May we be among those who call to goodness, who beautify the path of Allah, and who earn His pleasure in this life and the next.

📜 Verse 84-88 — Al-A'raf

And We rained upon them a rain [of stones]. Then see how was the end of the criminals.
And to [the people of] Madyan [We sent] their brother Shu'ayb. He said, "O my people, worship Allah; you have no deity other than Him. There has come to you clear evidence from your Lord. So fulfill the measure and weight and do not deprive people of their due and cause not corruption upon the earth after its reformation. That is better for you, if you should be believers.
And do not sit on every path, threatening and averting from the way of Allah those who believe in Him, seeking to make it [seem] deviant. And remember when you were few and He increased you. And see how was the end of the corrupters.
And if there should be a group among you who has believed in that with which I have been sent and a group that has not believed, then be patient until Allah judges between us. And He is the best of judges."
Said the eminent ones who were arrogant among his people, "We will surely evict you, O Shu'ayb, and those who have believed with you from our city, or you must return to our religion." He said, "Even if we were unwilling?"
