Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- Sa'ala (سَأَلَ): Here it means "asked" or "requested" — specifically, it carries the sense of one who called for or inquired about something.
- Sa'il (سَائِلٌ): One who asks — referring to a person from the disbelievers of Quraysh.
- Bi'adhabin (بِعَذَابٍ): About or for a punishment — the particle "bi" here can mean "about" (as in asking about something) or "for" (as in calling for something).
- Waqi'un (وَاقِعٍ): That which is certain to occur, inevitable, and bound to happen.
Explanation of the Verse:
In this opening verse of Surah Al-Ma'arij, Allah tells us about a question that was raised by one of the disbelievers — a man from the Quraysh who, in his arrogance and mockery, asked when the promised punishment of Allah would come. Some narrations mention that this was a specific individual who said: "O Muhammad, if this punishment you warn us about is true, then bring it down upon us!" — and he said this while ridiculing the Prophet ﷺ and the believers.
The verse can be understood in two complementary ways:
First, it was a question — an inquiry about the timing of the punishment. The disbeliever was not genuinely seeking knowledge; rather, he was challenging and mocking the Prophet's warnings, as if to say: "When will this punishment you threaten us with actually come?"
Second, it was a request — a call for the punishment to descend upon him and his people. In his arrogance, he dared Allah to send the punishment, not believing it would ever happen.
Allah's response in the following verses is profound and definitive: the punishment is certain — it is "waqi'un" (واقع), meaning it will inevitably occur. There is no doubt about it, and no power can prevent it from coming. The One who has decreed it is Allah, the Owner of the highest degrees of honor and majesty, the Lord of the ascension pathways through which the angels and the Spirit (Jibril) ascend to Him.
This verse carries a powerful lesson for every reader: mockery of Allah's promises does not delay them, and arrogance before His warnings does not cancel them. The punishment that the disbeliever so flippantly called for is real, and it will descend — whether in this world or on the Day of Judgment — for Allah's word is true, and His decree is never broken.
A Call to Reflection:
Dear reader, ponder how this disbeliever challenged the punishment of Allah with such boldness, and yet today, how many people do the same? They see the signs of Allah's power and the warnings of His messengers, yet they turn away, asking with arrogance: "When will this threat come to pass?"
But the believer knows that Allah's promise is certain. The punishment of Allah is not a matter of "if" — it is a matter of "when." And for those who believe and do righteous deeds, there is the opposite promise: gardens of delight, forgiveness, and a generous reward. So choose today which promise you wish to be true for you — the promise of punishment for the arrogant, or the promise of Paradise for the humble and obedient.
Let this verse be a reminder that no one can escape the justice of Allah, and no one can stand between a soul and its appointed end. The wise person is the one who takes heed before the punishment arrives, and who turns to Allah in repentance while the door of forgiveness is still open.
