Key Words and Their Meanings:
- الصَّالِحُونَ (As-Sāliḥūn): The righteous, the pious, and the obedient to Allah.
- دُونَ ذَٰلِكَ (Dūna dhālika): Below that; those who are less righteous, including the disobedient and the disbelievers.
- طَرَائِقَ قِدَدًا (Ṭarā'iqa qidadā): Diverse sects, paths, or groups; literally, "roads cut into strips," meaning different factions with varied beliefs and ways.
Explanation of the Verse:
In this noble verse, the jinn—who had just embraced Islam upon hearing the Qur'an—continue to narrate their state to their people. They acknowledge with honesty and humility that they, the jinn, are not a single, uniform community. Among them are the righteous—those who believe in Allah, fear Him, and strive to obey His commands, such as the group that listened to the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) and accepted the guidance of the Qur'an. And among them are others who are less than that—those who persist in disbelief, wickedness, and transgression, turning away from the truth.
They then describe themselves as having been "ṭarā'iqa qidadā"—diverse sects and divergent paths. This means they were split into various factions and schools of thought, each following its own whims, desires, and false beliefs. Some were Muslims, some were Jews, some were Christians, some were Magians (fire-worshippers), and some were polytheists. They were like separate roads branching off in different directions, each leading its followers away from the straight path of Allah.
This verse teaches us a profound lesson: diversity in belief and practice is a reality among all of Allah's creation—both humans and jinn. Yet, the truth is one, and it lies in submission to Allah alone. The jinn's acknowledgment of this diversity serves as a call to reflection: just as they recognized the truth and turned to it, so too must every soul seek the straight path and abandon the fragmented ways of ignorance.
A Da'wah Reflection:
Beloved reader, ponder this verse with an open heart. The jinn, who were once lost in their many divergent paths, found unity and salvation in the single, unchangeable truth of Islam. They did not remain stubbornly attached to their old ways; instead, they listened to the Qur'an with sincerity and embraced it. This is an invitation for you as well—no matter how many paths you have wandered, no matter how divided your heart may be, the door of guidance is open. Allah calls you to the one path that leads to Him: the path of faith, righteousness, and sincere devotion. Do not let the multiplicity of worldly ways distract you from the eternal truth. Answer the call of the Qur'an, as the jinn did, and you will find peace, purpose, and the ultimate success in this life and the Hereafter.
