Tafsir (Explanation):
In this noble verse, Allah informs us of a profound truth: had the disbelievers — whether from among humankind or the jinn — remained steadfast upon the path of Islam, the path of guidance and submission to their Lord, He would have granted them an abundant and overflowing provision. The mention of "water" here is not merely literal; it symbolizes the vast blessings and sustenance that Allah bestows upon those who walk in obedience to Him. This came as a direct response to a period of severe drought that had afflicted the people for seven years — a trial that lifted the moment they turned back to their Creator.
The verse carries a gentle yet powerful reminder: the key to worldly prosperity and spiritual tranquility lies in steadfastness upon the straight path. When a community aligns its heart and actions with the teachings of the Qur'an and the Sunnah, Allah opens for it the gates of blessing from places it could never imagine. This is not a promise of mere material wealth alone, but a comprehensive well-being that encompasses provision, security, and peace of heart.
Yet, there is a deeper layer here — a test within the blessing. Allah does not grant abundance merely for indulgence; rather, He tests His servants: will they be grateful, or will they become arrogant and forgetful? The verse concludes with a sobering warning: whoever turns away from the remembrance of their Lord, from the Qur'an and its guidance, will be subjected to a severe and ever-increasing punishment. This is a call to reflection — for every soul that hears this message, the invitation is open: stand firm upon the path of truth, and you will find rivers of mercy flowing beneath your feet, both in this life and the next.
