Key Words and Their Meanings:
- Al-Qāsitūn (الْقَاسِطُونَ): Those who deviate from the truth, act unjustly, and are biased against what is right. It refers to those who stray from the path of justice and faith.
- Ḥaṭaban (حَطَبًا): Firewood or fuel for a fire. In this context, it means that these wrongdoers will be the fuel that feeds the flames of Hell.
Explanation of the Verse:
In this verse, Allah (Glorified and Exalted be He) draws a clear distinction between two groups among the jinn who listened to the Qur'an. The first group, mentioned in the previous verse, are the Muslims who submitted to Allah in obedience and sincerity—those who sought the path of guidance and were guided to it. The second group, addressed here, are al-Qāsitūn—those who deviated from the straight path, acted unjustly, and turned away from the truth after hearing it.
For these unjust ones, their end is severe and certain: they will be firewood for Hell. Just as wood is thrown into a fire to keep it blazing and intensify its heat, these wrongdoers will be cast into the flames of Jahannam to fuel its eternal blaze. This is not a mere metaphor but a stark reality of the Hereafter—they will be the kindling that sustains the fire, alongside others like them from among mankind and the jinn who persisted in disbelief and oppression.
This verse serves as a powerful reminder that no one is forced into this fate. The jinn, like humans, were given the choice to listen, reflect, and submit. Those who chose justice and faith were saved, while those who chose injustice and stubbornness sealed their own destiny. The imagery of firewood is vivid and sobering—it shows that the punishment is not arbitrary but a direct consequence of one's own actions and choices.
A Call to Reflection and Action:
Dear reader, this verse is not only about the jinn—it is a mirror for all of us. It teaches us that the Qur'an is a living message that reaches every heart, whether human or jinn, and that every soul is accountable for how it responds. The path of islām (submission to Allah) is the path of justice, balance, and ultimate success. The path of qusūt (deviation and injustice) is the path of ruin.
Let this verse inspire you to examine your own life: Are you among those who hear the truth and embrace it with humility and sincerity? Or are you among those who turn away, letting pride or desire lead you astray? The choice is yours, and the consequences are real. Allah, in His infinite mercy, has shown us the way and warned us of the fire—so that we may choose wisely and save ourselves from a fate that no soul would wish to endure.
Turn to Allah today with a sincere heart, seek His guidance, and strive to be among the muslimūn (those who submit) who are promised safety and honor. For the fire is real, but so is the mercy of Allah—and His mercy is far greater than any sin, for those who repent and return to Him.
