Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- ارتَضَى (irtadā): Chose, selected, and approved.
- يَسْلُكُ (yasluku): To make pass, to send along, or to set in motion.
- رَصَدًا (raṣadan): Guards or watchers; here, angels assigned for protection.
Tafsir (Explanation):
This verse comes as a continuation of the previous one, where Allah declares that He alone knows the unseen and does not reveal it to anyone — except to a messenger whom He has chosen and approved for His mission. To such a messenger, Allah discloses whatever portion of the unseen He wills, as a special favor and necessity for delivering the divine message.
The verse then explains that Allah sends guardians — angels — before the messenger and behind him. These angels protect him from the jinn and devils who might try to eavesdrop on the revelation or tamper with it. This protection ensures that the message reaches humanity pure and unaltered, and that no one other than the chosen messenger gains access to the unseen knowledge Allah bestows.
This divine guarding serves multiple purposes: it reassures the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) that he is protected just as the prophets before him were, it confirms the truthfulness of his message, and it establishes that Allah’s knowledge encompasses everything — what is hidden and what is apparent — and that He has counted all things precisely.
A Da'wah Reflection:
This verse is a profound reminder of Allah’s absolute knowledge and His special care for His messengers. When we realize that Allah protects His revelation and His chosen servants, our hearts find tranquility in the authenticity of the Qur'an. The fact that Allah sent angels to guard the Prophet (peace be upon him) from every direction shows how precious this message is to Him — and how precious we are to Him, for this message was sent for our guidance.
Let this verse strengthen your trust in the Qur'an as the unaltered word of Allah. No devil, no human, and no force could corrupt it, because the One who revealed it is the One who preserved it. And if Allah took such care to protect His message, how much more should we take care to receive it with open hearts, act upon it with sincerity, and share it with others with love and wisdom? The same Allah who guarded His Prophet is guarding you today — so walk in His path with confidence, knowing that His protection encompasses those who strive in His way.
